Microsoft Reveals Specs for Xbox Scorpio

Microsoft has revealed the specs for Xbox Scorpio, the next version of its Xbox console. The new console will offer improvements in speed, performance, memory and storage space. There is also the promise of backwards compatibility for previous Xbox video games.

Microsoft revealed the details on its Project Scorpio site. Microsoft calls Scorpio the "most powerful console ever, featuring 6 Teraflops of graphical processing power, true 4K gaming, and compatibility with Xbox One games and accessories."

Scorpio will arrive in stores later this year in time for holiday shopping. Microsoft says Scorpio will offer 4K gaming, a vapor chamber with liquid cooling, the Hovis Method to minimize power consumption and the powerful Scorpio gaming processor. The processor provides a 6 Teraflop GPU, 12 GB GDDR5 memory and 326 GB/s memory bandwidth.

Kotaku reports that Microsoft says existing Xbox games will run smoother, faster and look better on Scorpio. Microsoft says, "All existing Xbox games (including Xbox One Backward Compatible titles) will run smoother, look better and load faster without requiring an update or any work from developers. All games running on Project Scorpio will achieve more consistent frame rates, faster load times, improved anisotropic filtering, and will run at their peak resolution if the title implemented dynamic scaling."

Digital Foundry has a detailed look at the Scorpio specs. The hope is that the new system will usher in a wave of true 4K games. Digital Foundry says performance was "remarkable" on a Forza Motorsport demo they observed.
