Electronic Arts placed this video of The Simpsons video game on YouTube where it quickly received over 1.5 million views. The video plays to the "Rock You Like a Hurricane" song by the Scorpions. The Simpsons game hits stores November 1st for the Playstation2, Playstation3, XBOX 360, Wii, NDS and PSP. They are pretty excited about a toy called the Homerball (pictured on right) on the official website. If the game is as big a hit as the movie it should do pretty well. By the way, the website for the Simpsons film had a few time killer games include a skateboarding Bart game that isn't bad and a pong game you play against computer opponents. They also have a Simpson's avatar creator tool there.
Flakeshake is a web game created by Stefan Lewandowski. In Flakeshake
you help an adorable little polar bear try and turn rain droplets back into snow flakes. The polar bear blows bubbles that will turn the rain droplets into snowflakes. You can control the size of the bubble by holding down on the mouse button. You can also steer your bubbles with the mouse as you target the rain droplets. Treehugger says adults can use this game as a way to jump-start a conversation with your children about climate change and about why the ice is melting.
Statetris is an online game that mixes aspects of the popular game Tetris with local U.S. geography. Instead of positioning the typical Tetris blocks, you position states/countries at their proper location. Statetris is a pretty tough game (at least on the hard level) even if you know all your states -- the state blocks are tough to lineup correctly. This could be a good teaching tool for a young student trying to learn his or her 50 states. It is also a worthy time waster for everyone else. Statetris games for other contintents and countries are also available. You really need to know your African geography to succeed at this version of Statetris.
You probably won't be able to resist a couple rounds with this online game based on Paris Hilton's recent prison sentence. The game is called The Prison Life: Paris and the object is to help Paris Hilton make license plates. You have to get the stamper to land correctly on the license plates as they go by on a conveyer belt which isn't as easy as it looks. You also have to avoid Paris Hilton's dog Tinkerbell as you stamp the license plates.
Paris Hilton only served twenty-three days and there have been no reports that she actually made license plates. However, she may have learned something based on her thoughtful July 4th message. If Paris learned something from prison maybe you can learn something from this game? No, you really can't learn anything from this game but it is an entertaining waste of time. The names of the license plates like BUSTD, CLUBGRL, SXTAPE and PRTYGRL are also pretty amusing.
Flow, once an online game, is now available for the PS3. In the game you pilot an aquatic organism through a surreal biosphere where players consume other organisms, evolve, and dive into the abyss. The PS3 website says an embedded design of DDA (dynamic difficulty adjustment) is used allowing players with differing skill levels to customize their game experience and enjoy the game at their own pace. You can play as one of 5 different creatures. You slowly become a more advanced creature as you eat other organisms. G4TV has a video review of the groovy trippy $8 game that is Flow for the PS3.
If you are not in the Valentine's Day spirit or you are tired after a full day of exposure to Valentines you should play this little time killer called My Black Valentine. It's more of a shooting gallery than a game that keeps score or challenges you but it might help provide the holiday stress relief you need. The game allows you to blast away at Valentine's Day icons like candy hearts, teddy bears and chocolate fondue. (via YesButNoButYes)
You've heard the Mooninites Scare Boston news headlines. You saw the breaking news videos (see here and here). And you've probably seen the 1-31-07 Never Forget tributes. But did you know there is also a game about the Mooninite invasion of Boston? The game is called Save Boston. Boing Boing explains:
This is like Whack-a-mole but you have to take out the suspicious Mooninite devices by clicking them with your mouse.
"More Than a Feeling" plays highspeed as the evil Mooninite signs yell, "Chowdah", "Tom Brady" "Fenway Pahk" "Wicked Pissa" etc. mocking all that Bostonians hold sacred.
At the end of the game you get "rated by haircut." It isn't bad for a timekiller game but it is more amusing than playable.
An advertising agency called Deft Creative has a holiday advergame called Leaping Rudolph that allows you to control a big ski jump for a ski wearing red-nosed reindeer. Adrants is pretty critical of the game.
Deft Creative Ltd.'s, awkwardly sloganed "Dexterous of hand and inventive of mind," demonstrates neither dexterity (though they try) nor inventiveness (no effort here) with this dull leaping-Rudolph ski game. The object is to beat the furthest leap and we're ensured by the agency guy that "All scores on the score board ARE beatable." Glad he made the effort to bang that in because otherwise we were going to lose sleep over it.
The scores don't actually seem beatable but you can get pretty close after a few jumps. It will kill a few minutes which is what a time killer is supposed to do. The real advergame this winner has to go to Elf Yourself -- which isn't really a game but it is pretty amusing. For more holiday coverage visit BloggersBlog.com's Blogging the Holidays.
The website for The Simpsons has a Flash game called Zombie Shoot-Out. The game was made for the upcoming Simpsons Halloween Special, "Treehouse of Horror XVII." The game is pretty simple you control your gun with the mouse and press the mouse button to shoot zombies. Be sure to watch for the Krusty the Clown zombie -- shooting him is the only way to get more ammo. In this game if you run out of ammo the game is over. Zombie Shoot-Out is similar to other zombie killing games like Ghost Rider's Demon Duel and the De-animator game. "Treehouse of Horror XVII" comes out on November 5th. You can read more about it here.
AddictingGames.com has earned a mention in a WSJ.com news story about humorous and political online games. The article includes a discussion of the Bush Backrub game that was based President Bush's notorious neck messsage given to German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In the game players have to keep world leaders happy by having President Bush give them neck massages.
Persuasive Games, a small firm in Atlanta, just released a Web game called "Airport Security," where players act as security officials screening passengers. The catch: The "rules" about what's allowed on board change about every 10 seconds -- one moment, all fishbowls must be removed from passengers' luggage, another, everyone must remove their pants.
Another game, "Bush Backrub," was released after President Bush gave German Chancellor Angela Merkel an impromptu backrub at the G-8 summit in St. Petersburg. Players must alternately give back rubs to Ms. Merkel, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, speeding back and forth among the leaders.
Not all of these games are spoofs. "Darfur Is Dying," is meant to educate young people about the crisis in Darfur. The player must take on the role of a Darfurian child or adult and attempt to survive.
For many of these games the focus is more on humor or politics than game play. You can see more of them on websites like AddictingGames.com. Here are the direct links to the games mentioned above: Airport Security, Bush Backrub and Darfur Is Dying. The Darfus is Dying game carries a serious message to raise awareness about the plight of the people in that country.
Today is Talk Like a Pirate Day so it is important to find at least one pirate-related time killer game to play. Sea Pirates is a worthy game. It allows you lubers to command a pirate ship and sail the search in search of pirate booty.
Take command of your ship and sail the seas in search of a pirate fortune. See if you have what it takes to rise from a lowly sea dog to a pirate island governor. Sea Pirates combines strategy with arcade action to give you hours of pirate fun.
Recommened for ages 13 and up Sea Pirates contains no blood or death -- only animated explosions and sea combat simulation. It is fun to blow up the other ships just be careful to avoid the friendly vessles. This will do for our TLPD time killer. If you want a more advanced pirates game try Yohoho Puzzle Pirates.
The website for the Ghost Rider movie has a great little timekiller called Demon Duel. Using Ghost Rider's chain weapon you have to kill zombies as they continually approach you. If you are a killed a very frightening demon zombie head appears to taunt you. The game has great sound effects. In a way it is somewhat of a souped up version of De-animator, which we mentioned in an earlier post. In the upcoming Ghost Rider video game you will get a chance to ride the supernatural Hell Cycle.
Goggles is an web-based flight simulator that uses Google Maps. Goggles lets you pilot a little plane as you fly over the Google Maps of various cities including Washington D.C., New York, Boston, Toronto, Belin, Paris and Sydney. You also pilot your Goggles plane over the Moon and Mars. The plane can also shoot although nothing is actually destroyed. The plane will also crash if flown too close to the ground. It is a surprisingly entertaining game to play and worthy of time killer status. Lots of bloggers are playing this game.
The Platial News and Neogeography blog has a good combat suggestion: "I propose a mmorpg version where you'd encounter other planes (and could shoot them down :)"
The Click Heard Round the World blogs how you can fly over your own house with a special URL hack.
The Swamp says Goggles is "totally the cutest flight sim ever."
Google Blogoscope include Goggles in a long list of Google games. Fast Company's blog also lists a few other Google games.
The Google Earth Blog notes that Google Earth has a similar feature called G-Force mode.
Sony Pictures has created a promo game, written in Shockwave, called Fast Track for the new Talladega Nights film starring Will Ferrell as Ricky Bobby. The game starts with the following welcome message from Ricky Bobby.
Hi. I'm Ricky Bobby. And if there's one thing I know it's how to win.
Winning is good. Winning is everything.
Now you can feel the awesome power of what's its like to win in my very own video game, Fast Track.
It's a pretty cool racing game for a free game. The game includes commentary from an announcer who tracks your move and announces all your gains and losses. Sometimes the announcer also makes a rude comments like "Ricky Bobby was driving that fast when he was 3." Now go drive like your pants are on fire!
The Hero Machine lets you create a super hero by selecting body type, head type, hair, headgear, mask, clothes, gloves, belt, pants, shoes, etc. You can also select weapons for your hero to hold. You can also change the color of any part of the superhero. When you are finished you can name and print your superhero. You can also email it to a pal. Other than these options you can't do a lot with the superhero you create except look at it. However, there are enough options on the Hero Machine to make this an enjoyable timekiller. Many different combinations of hero attributes and colors are possible. Kids would probably also enjoy it. If you are bored you can press the asterix looking button and a silly randomly generated superhero will appear.
KewlBox.com and Baskin-Robbins have a new online game called
Office Invaders. The game provides a Space Invaders type set-up. You play an an office worker up against invading executives and office managers. You can choose one of two characters
to battle the invading office invaders: Peter in Operations or Dawn, a Senior Account Executive. You use a rubber band ball to fire rubber bands at the advancing co-workers. The sound effects are pretty good. They include some funny comments from the invading IT workers like, "have you tried rebooting?"
Office Invaders is decent way to kill some time at work or take out some frustrations.
Blue Mountain, an retailer of animated online greeting cards, has an animated birthday ecard that includes a game of Birthday Invaders. The game is just like space invaders except the aliens are replaced by invading birthday party supplies. The graphics in the game are very unremarkable but because the game is contained in an ecard it might be funny as a birthday ecard for a gamer friend. You will need to register with Blue Mountain to be able to send this ecard.
Orisinal Games offers a collection of dozens of attractive online games created by Ferry Halim. The games feature attractive graphics and simple instructions. Many of the games involve a fairly simple challenge such as jumping, like in Panda Run (screenshot on right), where you
control a jumping padding. In other games you have to hit targets like in Snow-bowling, where you roll giant snowballs at skaters on a lake. Some of these games would fun for young children to play. Many of the games include cute animals which children would also like. There are ducks, pandas, koalas, cows, cats, monkeys, raccoons, bears and other creatures. Orisinal even runs an online store where they sell products featuring some of their cute characters.
In The Streaking Game you play a character named Sputter Freesway, who is a streaker for hire. Sponsors pay you to streak out on the field during sporting
events and reveal yourself and your sponsor's logo.
You're paid to sneak into major spectator events and burn
your sponsor's brand into the mind's eye of hte masses.
You'll go full monty, Baby! Focusing all attention upon
yourself for as long as you can manage with security forces
in hot pursuit all the while. When the going gets too
rough, try to make your way to your faithful getaway van
and beat it. Put on a good show and you'll be richly rewarded.
But if you're caught, your sponsor will deny any affiliation
with you and your icky naked wrongdoings.
The game offers several different levels: a football
game, a baseball game, a golf match and a dog show.
Use the arrow keys to move, the shift button to taunt
the audience and the space bar to show your sponsors'
banner. YesButNotButYes says The Streaking Game was probably created by
Trevor Van Meter, who also created Fly Guy.
TurboTanks has very unimpressive graphics but the playability makes the game worthwhile. The game is similar to the old two-player Atari game called Combat except in TurboTanks it is just you against the computer. When you win a level by destroying the computer's tank you advance to new levels with different obstacles. The command are simple. The right and left arrows are used for navigation and the CTR/Enter Key is used to shoot. That's really about all there is to TurboTanks. Its simplicity and fun trying to take out the computer make for a great time killer game.
There is an online time killer game called Trogdor featuring Trogdor the Burninator. Trogdor is a dragon with one muscular human arm. In the game you have to stomp on villagers while avoiding knights and archers. If you stomp on ten villagers you achieve burnination and you are able to burn (burninate) down cottages. When you have burned down all the cottages you can advance to the next level. More about Trogdor himself can be found the Wikipedia listing.
The website for the 40-Year-Old Virgin film has a very silly game where you have to wax a man's chest (the man is a cartoon version of Steve Carell) to create unique Man-O-Lantern designs. AdJab branded their Man-O-Lantern. If you saw the movie 40-Year-Old Virgin then you are already familiar with this scene. Unfortunately, this barely qualifies as a game because there is no way to score or win. But it is amusing so we decided to mention it anyway.
Sega has an online mini version of Super Monkey Ball. You have to carefully guide Aiai, the monkey inside the ball, through each floor without rolling him over the edge. The trick to keeping the floor level is to watch the level guides on the right side and bottom of the screen. There are nine floors in the mini game. We know Chad is so into Super Monkey Ball Deluxe but he probably likes this mini as well. (Via Hedonistica)
Web Zen has compiled a list of animal-related online games. In
Bug on a Wire you have to avoid hungry birds and flying insects while running on an electrical wire. In Bombs
Away you are a seagull at the beach trying to hit people with your bird droppings. Other games on the list include
Chicken-Tac-Toe, Panda
Bounce and Spider
Jump. We were disappointed there was no Crab Ball.
Theramed has an unusual advergame where you help a guy named Joe brush his teeth. The game takes you through seven days of helping Joe brush his teeth while he uses Theramed to make his teeth whiter. The object is to brush Joe's teeth based on the movement instructions that scroll by. The game plays amusing video of Joe trying to brush his teeth according to your mouse movements. You also have to press the spacebar to spit or you lose points. You'll have to see this game to believe it but you probably won't want to play more than once. There isn't much playability in this absurd advergame. (Via Advergame Network)
Lost Vectors has an online time killer game called Jedi Trainer 2.0. In the game you use your light saber to kill droids by deflecting lasers in to them. You lose hit points when a non-deflected laser hits you and the game ends when you run out of hit points. You start with ten hit points. The graphics are not the best but the playability is good. Besides everyone needs a little light saber training now and then.
We probably should have expected a Mentos advergame to be as bizarre as some of their commericals. The German game is called Mentos Sheep Volley and it can be played as both a one or two player game. You basically control sheep as you play a game of volleyball. The Advergame Network points out a couple more of the games features.
One of the nicest thing in the game is that they can take pictures of your(as a sheep) while playing so that you'll send them to your friends. Furthermore you can earn more points if you manage to collect Mentos candies during the game.
We prefer the playability of Crab-Ball but Mentos Sheep Volley isn't bad for a short time.
By now you have probably heard of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, also known as FSM, which has been very popular in the blogosphere. There is also a FSM Flash game available here on the FSM homepage. The instructions are pretty simple. You control the Flying Spaghetti Monster with your mouse and you use the mouse button to deploy your noodly appendage toward the people scurrying around below. You have to recruit as many people into pastafarians (by hitting them with your noodly appendage) as you can before time runs out. You also have to avoid contact with the darkly-clad school administrators. The game is more amusing than anything but it does qualify as a good timekiller game.
Sega Offers Online Mini Game for Latest Hedgehog Adventure
There is a cool online mini game available for the new Shadow the Hedgehog game from Sega which features a tough, gun-toting hedgehog. However, Kotaku questions Shadow's gun carrying ways:
There is something SO wrong about Shadow with a gun though -- on the loading screen, Shadow cocks his gun, and the sound is just so not something I want to associate with collecting rings and bouncing on platforms. Magic, slingshots, rotten tomatoes ... why guns??
The gun, which does seem a little out of place as a hedgehog weapon, is acceptable because the hedgehog character in this game has a dark past.
Shadow awakens with amnesia and is tormented by a dark past as he struggles to unveil his true identity. Was he created to save humankind or to do the evil bidding of the dark side? Only by collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds will Shadow unlock the truth. Caught in a complex battle between aliens, the G.U.N. army, and Dr. Eggman, Shadow becomes the very element that may tip the scales between good and evil forever. The epic is set…and the path that Shadow will ultimately take is completely up to you!
Dodge has a new Shockwave-powered advergame called Hemi Highway. Players use the arrow keys to navigate as they drive a Dodge Charger around different courses. Winning the races allows you to unlock different Dodge vehicles and new tracks. There are twelve different courses in the Dodge game. This game is not bad for an advergame and makes for a decent time killer. However, the ad you are forced to watch at the start of the game is a little long. It is an advergame so why should there also be another ad before you get to play it?
Tonight is Halloween so if you feel the need to kill some time as well as some zombies and other frights here a few online games that might help. A good online time killer is De-animator which is based on a H.P. Lovecraft story. The object is to shoot the zombies as they rise and come towards you. Funzap has a collection of games that allow you to kill things like evil clowns and monsters. Lockergnome points to a graveyard game. If you want some more involved games the AP
has an article describing some creepy games including Resident Evil 4, The Suffering: Ties That Bind, F.E.A.R. and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. If you are looking for more Halloween coverage our BloggersBlog.com weblog has ongoing coverage of the holiday.
King Kong Jump is a new advergame created to promote both Pringles and the upcoming King Kong movie directed by Peter Jackson. The concept of the game is simple. You use the arrows keys to move left, right, jump and duck incoming barrels and giant pringles cans. It is an amusing little time killer. (Via AdverGame Network)
Crab-Ball is a volleyball competition between two crabs. In the one player version you play against a computer crab opponent and the object is to land the ball in the computer crabs' sand. In the two player version you can compete with a friend -- one player uses the arrows and the other player uses the z, s and c keys to move their crab. To hit the volleyball you just to position your crab underneath it. Crab-Ball was created by Liam O'Donnell who has created over fifty games including advergames and games for competitions. Some of the other games on Liam's spikything website include Super Bughunt, Chasm and Super Kickups.
Want revenge on spam? AOL is now offering a way for people to take out their aggressions on spam in a new game called Spam Blaster.
AOL says the game is "Galaga with a twist: shoot incoming junk
e-mail." The game is part of the Discover AOL Arcade which also includes Virus Match, Agent Spyware and Hack Attack.
It's a decent little games area for kids or very bored adults.
Ant Kendo is a game where you battle another ant in kendo with a bamboo stick above a body of water. The object is to knock your ant samurai opponent into the water with some fancy kendo moves. You control the movements of your ant with the mouse and click above, below or directly on the ant for different types of attacks. Don't expect more from Ant Kendo than several minutes of entertainment -- it is just an online time killer after all. But the graphics are amusing and it is fun to knock the other ant into the water. The game was created by Luke Feiner who has a couple more games on his website.
More marketers are trying advergames to promote their brands. The latest company to try is Orbitz with a banner ad promoted website at orbitzgames.com that contains games like Sink the Putt, Swing for the Fences and Island Hop. The New York Times (via News.com) has an article about the Orbitz advergames.
The goal of advergaming is to encourage consumers to engage in a branded experience--that is, spend time voluntarily with an ad. That is usually more efficient and effective for a marketer than to chase after consumers with ads they are likely to shun. Among the other brands that have added sponsored online games to their marketing tactics are Jeep and Life Savers.
One "huge risk" in advergaming is that sponsors may "become better known for the games" than for their products or services, said Henry Harteveldt, an analyst who is the vice president for travel research at Forrester Research. Orbitz provided Harteveldt an advance look at the Web site so that he could discuss it with a reporter.
Advergaming that is done well "strikes a good balance between being creative and different," Harteveldt said, "and making sure people know who's behind it." He praised Orbitz for making "the brand part of the URL," or Web address. By contrast, some advertisers offer games under names like the Life Savers Web site, called candystand.com.
Orbitz executives have been mulling for some time ways to give computer users regular access to its online games. They first appeared in the form of what are called pop-under ads, that is, banner ads that turn up on a computer screen after a Web site is visited. Many computer users consider such ads annoying and have installed blockers that screen out pop-unders and their counterparts, pop-up ads.
Advergaming is a good branding concept today but only if the games are fun. It seems like a bad idea to ruin the idea by using pop-up ads that online gamers, who tend to be among the most web savvy, probably block or ignore. Or worse --they are turned off by the pop-ups. Other recent advergames include Mojo Master, which promotes Axe body spray; Pink Panty Poker, which promoted Victoria Secret lingerie; and Life Savers' candystand.com.
Stackopolis is an addictive tetris-style game. You have to arrange blocks to match a diagram displayed on the right. It sounds easy but it is not.
Do you think you have what it takes to master the 20 fiendish levels? You'll throw down your mouse, you'll swear it's impossible, but the one thing you'll never, ever do is leave! Match the blocks with the blueprint to create 20 different buildings.
Stackopolis was designed by Bloc Games. The Stackopolis website keeps track of thousands of high scores so maybe you can even get your name on the list.
For those of you who enjoy online distractions here is a little Flash game called The Haggis Hurl. In the game you launch the little Haggis creatures toward the target which contains an area worth ten points and a smaller area worth 50 points. Don't worry the Haggis creatures like to be tossed and they say "wheeee" as they fly through the air. However, they don't like to be touching another Haggis and they will push each other away if they get too close.
Got Used, a network of college bookstores, has a games
section that includes a couple of good diversions for
bored students and workers in cubicles. There is
Rock, Paper, Siz the game for those who just can't find
a way to play the real life version. The better distraction
at Got Used is Poom! which requires you to keep a ball
that drops from falling into a void by bouncing it on
squares. It isn't as easy as it sounds. One quick Poom tip:
try to watch the shadow of the ball on the squares instead
of the actual ball itself.
This goes in the time killer category for those of you
who are extremely bored. In this game from Staples called the Desk Apprentice Game you try and catch office supplies as they fall from above. Eventually the
office supplies start falling so quickly that it is impossible
to catch them all. We even saw a bowling ball and a cat falling
down -- those aren't office supplies? At the end of the game
you are given a score ranging from Chump to Trump. The game was designed for the Desk Apprentice Organizer that became popular on Donald Trump's The Apprentice.
Sheppard Software has a collection of geography games called the
States Web Games. The games allow players to test their U.S.
geography skills. Some of the games involve guessing the names
of capitals and states while in others the player has to drag
a state to its proper location on a U.S. map using the mouse.
These are amusing time killers and educational as well.
(via Boing Boing)
Bum Lee has an interesting online flash game called the De-animator. The game is based on stories by H.P. Lovecraft. The object is to shoot horrifying zombies as they approach you. If you don't kill the zombies they will get you and sometimes rip off your head. Yet another great time killer.
A recentry entry on web zen notes some free online games that are great time killers. The games are very simple, but lots of fun. Try Notepad Invaders (pictured on right) for a fun game of space invaders -- we like how the invaders look like hand-drawn notepad scrawl. Click the Dot is a silly little game. And Reflex and Proximity are fun strategy games. BoingBoing.net also mentions this web zen entry.
180solutions says that since its launch earlier this year, more than
30 Web publishers have joined its Zango games website. Zango says its partners receive revenue generated from the Zango Search Assistant. Zango has a watch ads to play games strategy. Players have to download the Zango Search Assistant, which shows 2 to 3 ads every 24 hours, in order to play free games like Attack of the Monster Robots. Attack of the Monster Robots challenges players to protect Earth from devastating ruin. Players must battle for victory to save mankind in this online action game from Zombie Studios and Zango Games.
