Much Hyped Halo 3 Arrives to Great Reviews

Halo 3The countdown to the long awaited release of Halo 3 has nearly completed. It's the biggest game of the year and the buzz and hype behind the game has been noted repeatedly by bloggers and journalists over the past several weeks. The game has already sold over 1.25 million copies worldwide in pre-orders alone. It is a crucial must-succeed game for Microsoft and the Xbox console which has been carried on Master Chief's soldiers ever since the first Halo game. i4u reports that game is receiving great reviews from game reviewers so it looks like Halo 3 will live up to the enormous hype. GameSpy said Halo 3 lives up in the hype and that the game is the reason many people bought an Xbox 360.
For many gamers, Halo 3 is the reason they bought an Xbox 360. As the biggest title in the 360's arsenal, Halo 3 is undoubtedly the most hyped game in existence. Notice, however, that we didn't say over-hyped. We've put in some serious hours reviewing this game, and after several exhaustive playthroughs both solo and co-op as well as countless bloodthirsty multiplayer rounds, we can announce that Halo 3 is everything that it needed to be to fulfill our wildest gaming fantasies... and then Bungie showed us The Forge.
We've also listed some review links at the boom of this post. With glowing reviews like these Halo 3 may be the reason many more people decide to buy an Xbox 360.

In Halo 3 Master Chief returns to protect Earth from the Covenant. The Covenant is an alliance of alien races determined to exterminate humanity. Master Chief Petty Officer SPARTAN-117 - aka Master Chief - is the last of a group of special supersoldiers genetically and cybernetically engineered to defeat the Convenant. The first-person shooter game can be played as a solo game or as a multiplayer game with up to four other people on Xbox live. The game can be played on a regular Xbox 360 but there is also a $399 Xbox 360 Halo 3 Special Edition for die-hard Halo fans.

There are several product tie-ins related to this blockbuster release from Bungie. USA Today reports that Marvel Comics has a special four-issue Halo Uprising series. Todd McFarlane has even designed special Halo 3 controllers and miniature action figures. There was even a Halo 3 car in the Dover NASCAR race. There's also the upcoming Halo movie -- more details on that here.

PC World reports that a pirated version has found its way on to the Internet. Microsoft will be trying to shut that down as quickly as possible.

At midnight tonight Halo 3 will finally be sold in stores and the buzz and hype can move on to the next hyped-up game. Even Bungie may look into other projects now that Halo 3 is complete. In the meantime, here are some more Halo 3 resources to keep you in the know.

Halo 3 Beta Invite Inside Crackdown

Halo 3 Box CoverA Bungie FAQ has some important information for gamers interested in the Halo 3 beta. The FAQ says that beta registration has closed. The only way to still get one is to buy a copy of Crackdown, which comes out on February 20th.
Is Halo 3 beta registration closed?

Yes, phases one and two of the beta have already ended. If you haven't received an email by this point, then you were not one of the lucky few.

    Is there no other way?!

If you didn't get in to either phase, then you can still get in by buying Crackdown, releasing in the US, on February 20th. Inside every launch copy of Crackdown is an invite to the Halo 3 beta.

How will the Crackdown invite work?

Once the Halo 3 beta has been activated (start date is still TBD) you simply go to the Downloads menu in Crackdown to download the Halo 3 beta. After that, you will need to launch the Halo 3 beta from within Crackdown. You will need an Xbox 360 with a hard drive and an Xbox Live Gold account.
The FAQ also says that the beta will not go live when Crackdown is released. It will not go live until it is ready which they say will probably be sometime this Spring. It also says that the Halo 3 beta will "only be playable for a limited time." Amazon.com is also excited about Halo 3. They have a preorder up now that includes a Halo 3 announcement trailer and Halo 3 "Starry Night."

Moral Kombat: A Documentary on Video Game Violence

The Mercury News reports that a trailer is out for Moral Kombat, a new documentary by Spencer Halpin that takes an in-depth look at the often discussed issue of video game violence.
Spencer Halpin has been working on Moral Kombat, a documentary on video game violence, for a long time. He's finished the film and has posted this trailer for it on YouTube. Spence, the brother of Entertainment Consumers Association founder Hal Halpin, interviewed me for this film a while back at the Dice Summit in Las Vegas with a green screen behind me. I talked about the loss of my brother to real-life violence and how I can reconcile that with playing violent games. He's made the film a visual wonder by splicing in game footage in the background behind the interviewees. What's cool is not just the discussion but the melding of visual images that relate to what the interviewees are saying.
Joystiq hopes the documentary carries a balanced tone. GamePolitics has more background on the documentary. They say Spencer Halpin has been working on Moral Kombat for the past years and the budget was around $1 million. Here is the trailer for the documentary.

Gears of War Sells Two Million Copies

Games of WarMicrosoft Game Studios and Epic Games, Inc., have confirmed in a press release that Gears of War, an Xbox 360-exclusive title, has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide since its release just six weeks ago. 1 million copies were sold here in the U.S. alone.
"Gears of War clearly has won the battle for the title of the must-have game of the year," said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of global marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft Corp. "Its phenomenal success is one of many reasons why Xbox 360 is the ultimate place to get together with friends to play this holiday."

"We've always held high hopes for Gears of War, but we never expected such an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and gamers all over the world," said Michael Capps, president, Epic Games. "I can't describe how stoked our team is right now. Our fans can absolutely count on Epic to keep delivering new gameplay through Xbox Live."

In addition to being the must-have video game of the holiday season, Gears of War continues to rage on the Xbox Live battlefield as well, with more than 1 million unique gamers engaging in 10 million online gameplay sessions and unlocking an impressive 7 million achievements.* On top of being the No. 1 title on Xbox Live, Gears of War has driven new members to the network; paid registrations per day have skyrocketed more than 50 percent since the game's launch.
Gears of War is a third-person tactical action/horror game that puts you in the middle of the story of the human races battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet. The game has been making news all year -- even the launch party was a big deal. Gears of War also won four awards at the Spike TV Video Game Awards.

GamePro Selects Best Video Game Franchises

Zelda and DoomGamePro has made a list of what they think are the ten best video game franchises. Their list includes game series like Castlevania, Metal Gear, Resident Evil and Metroid. The top there were Finaly Fantasy, Mario and The Legend of Zelda. Bomberman is on the list at #10 and mabye there was another franchise out there that was better? Here's why they liked Bomberman so much.
Later versions of Bomberman added new twists to the battle arenas-conveyor belts, pipes, warp zones, mine carts, catapults, kangaroos-and the power-ups also became more plentiful and diverse. The Bomberman character itself is also enduring: with his antenna-capped white helmet, pastel blue vest, black belt, and red hands and feet, he's one of the most recognized video game creations ever. The game's simplistic musical chimes also had a nasty habit of playing through one's head for days.
Fair enough but we still aren't sure why Bomberman is on the list and its unfortunate that Doom only ranked as high as six but it is an interesting feature nonetheless. None of the sports game franchises and arcade classics were included by GamePro.

All Game Genres Soon to Have Persistent Online Worlds

Test Drive UnlimitedMSNBC.com has an informative article that explains some of the upcoming MMO games announced at E3. There are quite a few of them. Most of them offer up a direct challenge to the currently leader in this category: World of Warcraft (WOW). WOW currently dominates with its 5.5 million subscribers. The challengers listed in the article include: Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, Tabula Rasa, Archlord, Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising, Soul of the Ultimate Nation, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar.

MMORPGs are also expanding into new categories that offer interesting gameplay outside of the typical fantasy adventure type of scenario, or "beyond orcs" as MSNBC writes. The MSNBC.com article describes three of these kind of games including Huxley, Project Wiki and Test Drive Unlimited. Huxley takes the first-person shooter concept into a persistent world. Project Wiki targets teens and young females with its fairy-tale world online game concept. And Test Drive Unlimited combines an online gaming world with auto and motorcycle racing. You can see a theme here where all gaming genres will eventually have a persistent online world. The graphic above is a screenshot from Test Drive Unlimited.

    Game Developers Get Crabby

Genji2 CrabMike K. Nowak, the blogger at the-inbetween.com, noticed that many of the new games being displayed at the E3 Expo displayed monstrous crabs of several varieties. Here is Nowak's caption for the crab villain displayed on the right.
Then came the Genji 2 demo, which made me laugh and laugh so much. The idiocy of it has already caused it to become a bit of an internet joke, and it can be seen in the Sony Press Conference in One Minute video that's making the rounds. Once the giant crab creature showed its face in this historic game with real battles from history, there was no saving Sony's showing.
This is just one of the many crabs Nowak noticed. He also found crabs in Resistance: The Fall of Man, Gears of War, Lost Planet, Chrome 2, Gothic 2 and several other games. It's quite a collection and proof that game developers' nightmares must be full of menacing giant crabs. Of all the crabs we like the giant crab-spider in Resistance: The Fall of Man the best.

    Blow Things Up in Black

A BBC article describes Black from Electronic Arts as "big, dumb and full of guns." Black is a first-person shooter that focuses blowing things up and offers a wide array of weapons to choose from.
There is a reason the developers describe Black as "gun porn".

In this four-course feast for the explosion-starved, players fill the hobnails of Jack Kellar, part of the world's most brutal strike force, as he hunts down an ex-CIA operative in the Eastern Bloc.

But just as Burnout threw realism to the wind in favour of pulse-pounding carnage, so Black is devoid of any real strategy, puzzles or needlessly complicated plot.

Instead it favours the most lethal cocktail of weapons ever seen in a game and with the emphasis on blowing up anything that moves.

In fact, even if it does not move, you can pretty much reduce it to rubble, as in the Red Faction game.
The game should provide a lot of action since Black, the covert group your character has joined, is the world's most brutal and enigmatic strike force. Black works for the U.S. but it answers to no one and operates in complete anonymity. More information about the game can be found on the official website and on Amazon.com's pages for the Xbox and PS2 versions. The game is expected on stores on April 11th.

Tactical Iraqi Teaches Troops Iraqi Gestures

Tactical IraqiThe BBC reports that the U.S. military is using a game called Tactical Iraqi to learn how to use Iraqi gestures and communicate better with Iraqis.
The program teaches military personnel some key gestures such as an up-down movement with the right hand to ask someone to slow down and gives them tips such as removing mirror sunglasses when approaching local people.

"In Iraq, to show sincerity you have to put more effort into your gestures," said Dr Vilhjalmsson.

"In Western countries, we control our body language more. In Arabic culture, it is important you show how open you are."

He added that reserved body language in exchanges with local people could be interpreted as having something to hide in Iraq, potentially escalating a tense situation.

Military personnel also learn that people can approach each other more closely than one normally might in the West.
It sounds like it could be helpful and the troops in Iraq can use all the help they can get. The game was built using the Unreal Tournament game engine, which is a first-person shooter game. Now it is being used for gesturing instead of shooting.

Eidos Releasing Two Gangster Shooters in 2006

IGN reports that Eidos has announced January 18, 2006 as the release date for the controversial cops and gangsters title called 25 to Life.
Developed by Avalanche, 25 To Life is a third-person shooter set in modern urban streets. You'll choose to play either cops or criminals to either infiltrate a drug lord's inner sanctum, or bust out of jail and fight your way up the ranks of the underground.
25 to Life will be available for the PS2, Xbox and PC. More information can be found on the official game website and on Amazon.com. 25 to Life has been highly criticized. It has been called "evil" and a "cop killer" game. Ferrago reports that another Eidos gangster shooter, called Roll Call, that allows the player to be a good or bad cop, has been renamed Zero Tolerance.
Gangster shooter Roll Call has been renamed and re-dated this week, publisher Eidos Interactive has announced. Roll Call will from henceforth be known as Zero Tolerance -- City Under Fire, and will now be released in the second-quarter of 2006 (sometime between spring and early summer, broadly speaking). This new date serves Europe, and possibly other PAL regions, whilst the publisher has yet to announce plans for North America. The game is still being created for the Xbox and the PS2, with Rocksteady Studios of London developing this latest gang-land action title.
If a recent study was true many gamers will probably play the gangster or the bad cop in the above games.

Stop the Bugs in Starship Troopers Game

A Starship Troopers game developed by Empire Interactive and Strangelite Studios is coming out this November for the PC. According to the game's faq the game is set in the universe seen in the films and take place several years after the events in the second film. The films were based on the book by Robert Heinlein.
At the start of the game, the war against the Bugs is not going well the bugs are rampaging across Hesperus - a planet perilously close to Earth. Colonised by man, Hesperus was once a haven of earthly tranquillity. Now, it is a terrifying battleground where the weaknesses of an implacable foe must be discovered and exploited. In a mix of 'mass action' and 'infiltration' levels it will be up to the player to make a difference in this titanic struggle and drive the arachnid invaders back into the depths of space.

The player is a member of the elite 'Marauder Unit' - the 'Delta Force' or 'SAS' of the future. As such, they are supplied with upgraded weapons and equipment, enabling them to participate in commando-style raids and stealth missions as well as 'toe-to-toe' mass battles. This allows us to challenge the player with a wide variety of different game play situations and gives them the opportunity to unleash an extensive range of weapons with enormous destructive power.
Some reviews can be found here and here. In another review GameZone.com gives the new Starship Troopers first-person shooter game a good review.
The AI, for the most part, seems very well done and the dynamic lighting effects work particularly well in adding mood to this desperate battle.

Starship Troopers does not look like it will be the type of shooter that will appeal to everyone. Even at the easy settings, the game spares no bugs for assaults at the higher difficulty levels. Battles can go on and on and just when you think it won’t ever end, they seem to subside.

But for those who are looking for intense combat situations, seemingly non-stop action, that is graphically pleasing, Starship Troopers may be just the title you are looking for.

Destroy All Humans Game Becomes TV Show

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Fox has acquired the television rights to develop a game based on THQ's Destroy All Humans video game.
Fox Broadcasting Co. has acquired the rights to develop THQ's best-selling sci-fi video game "Destroy All Humans!" into a half-hour CGI-animated comedy by former "King of the Hill" writer/co-executive producer Jim Dauterive. The deal marks the first time a video game will be used as the basis for a primetime network television program. The script will be developed through 20th Century Fox TV, where Dauterive has an overall deal. Set in the 1950s, the third-person action game puts players into the bulbous gray head of Crypto 137, an alien who has landed on Earth and is intent on destroying it.
Joystiq asks "could this turn into a cult hit or just a mess of a good idea?" It is a fun concept to play the role of an alien out to destroy humanity but how will this be done as half-hour tv show? It sounds like Jim Dauterive has a difficult task ahead of him. More about Destroy All Humans can be found on the official website and on Amazon.com.

Doom Scores at the Box Office

Jon Stewart was interviewing the Rock last week on the Daily Show and he gave Stewart a BFG prop to try. Stewart is known for being an active gamer and he was clearly knowledgable about the Doom game. A check on Rotten Tomatoes Doom page shows the movie only has about 20% positive reviews but there were a few good ones. Variety gave it a postive review:
"Videogame geeks and LAN-party enthusiasts everywhere, prepare to meet your Doom -- because it's really not all that bad."
Despite the negative reviews Doom came in first place over the weekend earning $15,488,870 at the box office. This news may bode well for future game to movie releases like the upcoming Halo film.

25 to Life Finds Buzz and Critics

25 to Life, an online multiplayer game from Eidos that lets players choose to be a criminal or a police officer, has a growing number of critics. Most of the criticism is because the game allows players to play a gang member that can kill police officers. Nancy Grace, the opinionated host of her own CNN show, said the game is evil and encouraged stores not to carry it.

Afterdawn.com reports that New York Senator Charles Schumer has also been critical of the game.
Once again the heat is on developers of violent video games as Sen. Charles Schumer, a Democrat from New York has targeted 25 to Life; an upcoming game which the Senator claims makes the Grand Theft Auto games look like "Romper Room" (a popular Children's TV Show in the U.S.). The video game is due out this summer. In the game you can either choose the side of gangs or the side of the law. The Senator wants this "cop killer" game boycotted by retailers and even calls on Microsoft and Sony to end their licensing agreements with Eidos.

During all the controversy last week the game soared to the top of the Yahoo! Buzz top movers list in the games category. Today, the Seattle Times reports that even Bill Gates himself is under fire from the game:
Even Bill Gates is being criticized in the media hysteria over 25 to Life, a game available this summer for the PC, Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation 2. The game, by U.K. game developer Eidos is being deplored for allowing players to kill police officers.
The 25 to Life is due out October 4, 2005 (according to Amazon.com) for the PC, Xbox and PlayStation 2. The game is rated M for blood and gore, intense violence, drug reference, strong language and sexual themes. The 25 to Life website can be found at: http://www.25tolife.com

Slowly Learning More About Quake 4

The Quake 4 trailer is now online at quake4game.com. GameTrailers.com's Quake 4 page also has videos of three trailers as well as an interview from G4TV. A recent feature on Gamespy nicely sums up what we know about the anxiously awaited Quake 4 to date:
After being announced nearly four years ago at QuakeCon 2001, how much do we really know about Quake 4? We know the single-player game will continue the story of the Strogg introduced in Quake 2; that it's being developed by Raven Software (creators of the Soldier of Fortune games as well as the latest Jedi Knight games) under the watchful eye of franchise creator id Software; and that it's using the same next-gen technology used to power 2004's DOOM 3.
The feature also included an interview with Raven Software project lead Eric Biessman, Raven art lead Kevin Long, and id Software designer Tim Willits. Quake 4 will be developed by Raven Software and id Software. Here is what Willits had to say about Quake 4:
Tim Willits: I believe that Quake 2 had the best single-player universe of the Quake series, and that's what we're returned to. And then Quake 3 had the best multiplayer feeling and experience of the Quake series. So with Quake 4, you have the best single-player environment to go off of, and then you have the best multiplayer environment to build off of. And honestly, I believe this will be our best Quake -- we've had 10 years to make this that game great. It's really building off the experience of the other Quake, the experience of id, the experience of the guys at Raven -- all the pieces have come together to create the perfect environment to make an awesome game.
With the Strogg storyline and Doom 3 engine what could go wrong? There are over 500 news articles in the Google News database for those in need of more Quake 4 information.

Stewart was fired up that the Rock was taking the role and said that he stays up until 5 am playing Doom games. Gamers might have good reason to be fired up about the movie as well -- a recent IGN article suggests that the Doom film could inspire future Doom games.

    Big Releases for 2005

2005 will have its big hits and a few sites are looking at what some of them might be. A recent BBC article highlights future releases like Ico 2, an expansion of Ico for PS2 with Wanda battling giants; Stalker, a PC first-person shooter; and the Star Wars game Knight of the Republic II for Xbox and the PC. An article from RPGDOT looks at some of the exciting upcoming role-playing releases for computer and video gamers including Freedom Force vs The Third Reich, The Bard's Tale and Knight of the Republic II. For Nintendo players, IGN has the scoop on Nintendo's line-up for 2005. 2005 will also see the Xbox2 releases. And both CNN and GameShout report that the 2005 Xbox 2 release could be expensive -- in the $300-400 range -- much more expensive than the $150-$200 Xbox.
