PSP Breaks Sales Records in UK

The BBC reports that Sony's PSP has broken sales records in the U.K. with 185,000 sales in just four days. The BBC says Sony expects to sell 1 million PSPs before the Christmas holiday.
Sony wants the PSP to appeal to more than just gamers. It also plays films, music, and browses the web wirelessly.

The gadget went on sale in Europe on 1 September, nine months after hit Japanese stores and six months after the US.

Sony expects a million PSPs to be sold in the UK before Christmas.

Shops across the country opened their doors at midnight last week to deal with the demand from gamers, with many reporting that they had sold out. Chart-Track also reported that nine of the 24 PSP games which were available at launch entered the Top 10 official UK games chart this week.

Topping the chart was Ridge Racer, with one in five people buying the game along with the PSP device.
The PSP, which plays games, music and films, was also a hit in the U.S. selling 500,000 copies in just two days.

Disney Plans Narnia Film and Game Debut in December

Disney Interactive, a publishing label of Buena Vista Games, Inc., has announced new details about its upcoming action/adventure title, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Inspired by the upcoming motion picture from Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media, the games will launch this holiday season, in conjunction with film's release. UK software developer Traveller's Tales is currently creating the console and PSP titles, while Griptonite Games, the handheld entertainment division of Seattle-based Amaze Entertainment, is developing the titles for Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. In the game, players enter the world of Narnia, a land frozen in a 100 year winter by the evil powers of the malevolent White Witch. In order to end the annual winter and free his people, the mighty lion Aslan invokes an ancient prophecy. It will become the destiny of four siblings from our world: Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie to work together and use their unique combat skills, weaponry and abilities to defeat the Witch and her armies to save Narnia. These four heroes must battle the evil forces of the White Witch by waging war against a vast variety of creatures, including Minotaurs, Minoboars, Cyclops, Werewolves, Wraiths, Ankleslicers, Wolves, Boggles and more. These creatures are modeled in the game after the characters being created for the motion picture, by New Zealand-based Weta Workshop, a digital and visual effects company whose credits include Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Van Helsing and I, Robot. Additional game features include puzzle solving, two-player action featuring all four characters, and real film footage. The film will be released December 9, 2005.

Sony says it will distribute enough PlayStation Portables (PSPs) in the United States so there will not be a shortage like there was in Japan. Sony has promised 1 million PSPs will be made available on March 24th. In Japan only 200,000 copies were available which led to widespread shortages in the country. Sony to Launch PSP on March 24th

Sony announced that its new portable gaming consule, Playstation Portable (PSP) will be available on Marth 24th. However, as IGN notes, the portable consule will be more expensive then expected. PSP will retail for $249.99. PSP comes with a 480 x 272 pixel high-resolution screen and uses the new Universal Media Disc (UMD), as its storage medium. UMD is only 60mm in diameter, but can store up to 1.8GB of digital data -- more than three times the data held on a CD-ROM. Sony says the new device is for watching movies and playing music as well as gaming and the new PSP launch package includes a copy of the Spider-Man 2 film on UMD. "PSP will evolve and elevate portable entertainment, giving users the freedom to play full 3D games, watch movies, listen to music and connect wirelessly on their terms, their time and their place," said Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive officer, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. Schelley Olhava, an analyst for research company IDC, told News.com that Sony's move to turn the new portable into a multimedia device could be risky. "Sony has to walk a very careful marketing path now," said Olhava. "People are going to buy this to play games. When you start packaging other things with it, that kind of blurs the message." However, Sony says PSP is already a hit in Japan with with more than 800,000 units shipped, including a 200,000-unit allocation that sold out on day one.
