PlayStation Home is a 3-D gaming community for PlayStation 3 that debuted this week. MSNBC's reviewer Winda Benedetti called home a "theater of the absurd" and a "testosterone-fueled meat market" because men greatly outnumber the women. However, Winda Benedetti also said the virtual world is a fascinating experiment.
Last Thursday, Sony launched the open beta for Home - a 3-D virtual world that anyone who owns a PlayStation 3 can visit for free. It is at once a grand, fascinating experiment in virtual community and social gaming ... as well as a theater of the absurd.
It is a place where people get together and connect over the games they love … and it's also a testosterone-fueled meat market where the men massively outnumber the women. It is absorbing, cool and frequently hilarious. But it also feels, at times, like a world where the madhouse inmates have been set free to run amok.
Director for PlayStation Home Jack Buser gave a detailed 24-minute behind-the-scenes look at PlayStation Home to GameStop. Take a look:
The NPD research group reports that the Nintendo Wii outsold its game console rivals easily in 2007. The Wii sold 6.3 million units - moving almost as many units as the Xbox and PS3 combined.
2007 Game Console Sales
Nintendo Wii: 6.3m
Microsoft Xbox 360: 4.6m
Sony PS3: 2.6m
The BBC reports that Halo 3 for the Microsoft Xbox was the top selling game - selling 4.8 million copies since its launch last year.
The Associated Pres reports that Sony is cutting the price of the 60 gigabyte Sony PlayStation 3 model by $100. The 60 gigabyte PS3 will fall from $599 to $499. The company has faced continual pressure from Nintendo's popular Wii game system. The AP also says Sony is coming out with an 80 gigabyte unit that will include a racing game called MotorStorm and retail for $599. The new unit will be availabe in August.
The new PS3 increases the system's storage capacity to 80 gigabytes from 60 gigabytes and also includes a retail copy of the online racing title "MotorStorm," a company spokesman said. It will be priced at $599.
The larger capacity machine won't be available in the United States and Canada until August.
It plays into the company's upcoming strategy of eventually offering downloaded high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and demos, Sony spokesman David Karraker said.
Karraker said further details on high-def movies for download would be released at a later date.
The announcement comes two days before the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica, Calif., where dozens of industry heavyweights including Sony rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. are expected to show off their latest games and related products.
Sony has also blogged about the new 80GB PS3 here on the Playstation Blog. You can read more about MotorStormhere on Sony's playstation.com website.
Flow, once an online game, is now available for the PS3. In the game you pilot an aquatic organism through a surreal biosphere where players consume other organisms, evolve, and dive into the abyss. The PS3 website says an embedded design of DDA (dynamic difficulty adjustment) is used allowing players with differing skill levels to customize their game experience and enjoy the game at their own pace. You can play as one of 5 different creatures. You slowly become a more advanced creature as you eat other organisms. G4TV has a video review of the groovy trippy $8 game that is Flow for the PS3.
An attractive upcoming virtual world for PlayStation 3 users called Home is getting some oohs and aahs from bloggers. Engadget reports that a large-scale beta of the world will be out sometime in April. The game has also been dubbed as a "Second Life killer" by some game bloggers but whether it has any chance of doing that or not remains to be seen.
The seeming-MMO even includes casual games such as pool, bowling and arcade machines embedded into the world, but at any time you can invite a fellow resident to join in on any PlayStation Network-capable game. As for user-generated content, PS Home allows you to hang your own pictures on your apartment walls and share videos with friends. You can of course dress up your avatar in assorted virtual clothings -- for a price -- all while enjoying "dynamic advertising" of some sort. A large scale beta goes live in April, with the full product to be launched this fall. Make sure to hit up the read link for a gallery of the beautiful scenery and idiotic conversations you too can be enjoying in a few months.
The BBC says publishers and retailers are expected to contribute to the new virtual world from Sony. Here is a video preview of Home.
The PlayStation 3 launched to huge crowds this week. The situation was not peaceful at some stores where near riots were reported.
It was almost like a scene out of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Sony's new Playstation 3 went on sale in the U.S. and near riots broke out. One person was shot. One ran into a flagpole and was injured during a melee. Some people waited outside stores for up to three days to be first in line to buy the gaming system.
Kotaku points to a video of someone being pushed into a flagpole at Wal-Mart. Joystiq has a roundup of indicidents which included robberies, beatings, stampedes and muggings. Now that the PS3 launch riots are over and PS3s are likely impossible to get in stores thanks to the shortage everyone will have to turn to eBay where special console sales rules have already been posted.
Concerns are being raised about when Sony's PlayStation 3 players will arrive and just how many of them will arrive. A shortage was already considered likely but a news story from Bloomberg suggests that Sony could miss its already planned targets. The first of Sony's PS3 delivery targets is November 17th.
Sony plans to ship two million PlayStation 3 players this year to the U.S. and Japan, and six million worldwide by March. The Tokyo-based company said yesterday annual profit would fall 35 percent to its lowest in five years on price cuts of the console in Japan and a recall of 9.6 million computer batteries.
"The honest answer is it's more of a target" for PlayStation 3 shipments, Jack Tretton, co-chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said yesterday in an interview. "Clearly we've had production issues."
A shortage of the PlayStation 3 would give Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. a bigger head start in the $20 billion console market when they sell their players next month in time for the year's biggest sales season. Sony cut the price of the PS3 in Japan after consumers complained it was too expensive compared with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii.
"It would be a big hill to climb with a console that costs twice as much," said John Broady, an analyst for GameSpot.com, a unit of Cnet Networks Entertainment that tracks video-game sales. "A lot of this is driven by mothers. When they look at their budget, I think the Wii is going to be very attractive."
A New York Timesarticle gives the game system a great review but notes that many parents looking for a console for their kids will be dissapointed.
And then there's the fact that it will be all but impossible for normal, everyday consumers to actually find a PlayStation 3 for sale this holiday season. Sony will be able to deliver only 400,000 copies of the machine to North America at first, and those will almost certainly sell out within hours, even though the top version of the PS3 will cost a mighty $600 before you even buy any games. (There are going to be a lot of angst-ridden parents and frustrated kids out there this year.)
There are also many articles, like this ABC News story focusing on the high price of the Sony PlayStation 3 but the real issue here is that many people will probably not be able to own one until 2007.
The BBC reports that a European retailer named Play.com has listed a pre-order for the Sony PlayStation 3. The system is not due to be released until November.
Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) has gone on sale on the web despite not being launched until November this year.
The next generation consoles are on offer as "pre-orders" to Europeans for £550 ($1,020) at online shop, play.com.
The website says that because of an expected European shortage, it cannot guarantee delivery before Christmas.
You can see the listing here. Play.com is selling pre-orders of the more expensive 60GB version for £550 ($1,020). After last year's Xbox 360 fiasco there will be concerns that supply shortages will make it hard for people to get the new PS3. If this happens you can expect PS3 prices to climb on eBay just like they did for the Xbox 360.
Are the new PlayStation 3 (PS3) prices of $499 and $599 too high? Some gamers think so but Sony's Kaz Hirai defends the prices in this CNN/Money article.
While gamers and many industry analysts are still recovering from their surprise at the high price tag for a premium PlayStation 3, the man whose division makes the machine said he doesn't understand the fuss.
"I think when you look at what we put into the box -- Cell, Blu-Ray, backwards compatibility, the ability to go online -- I think it's a very compelling package for consumers," said Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive officer of Sony (Research) Computer Entertainment America. "The totality of what we bring to the table makes it a good value for consumers."
With its highly advanced processor (called the "Cell" chip) and a top-of-the-line Blu-Ray disc player, the PlayStation 3 was bound to be expensive. Standalone Blu-Ray players cost roughly $1,000. But when Sony announced plans Monday to offer two versions of the PS3 for $499 and $599, it set a record for major console launch prices.
Sony announced the prices at the E3 Expo. The higher priced model ($599) has a 60GB drive compared to the $499 model's 20GB drive. A BBC article explains a few other differences and similarities in the two models.
The two models have very different specs. As well as different hard drives, the cheaper machine will not have in-built wireless or an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) connector necessary for hooking the machine up to a High Definition TV or monitor.
However, both systems will come with a new controller. Sony has abandoned last year's boomerang-shaped prototype and reverted to a design similar to the current model for the PlayStation 2.
One key difference is the inclusion of a motion sensor in the wireless Bluetooth controller.
In a demonstration, a virtual duck was made to jump out of the water by moving the controller upwards.
You can see the specs for the PS3 here. Some gamers are not happy with the PS3 prices. Kikizo Games writes, "The price comes as a shock to the many people that thought Sony would offer its new console at something closer to what Microsoft is charging for the premium Xbox 360 package. Outside of the ill-fated 3DO console, it's also the most expensive console ever." Other bloggers, like Whatever say the PS3 prices are fine.
At the E3 Conference Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates boasted that the Xbox 360 has a 10 million unit head start over the next generation systems from Playstation and Nintendo.
"By opening the Xbox Live entertainment network to the entire universe of Windows and mobile gamers, we're creating unparalleled gameplay opportunities that will drive incredible growth of the online community," said Gates. "Our vision is to deliver consistent, compelling experiences that make it easy for consumers to jump in and play, from any device at any time. It's a vision that only Microsoft can deliver."
Gates, making his first appearance at E3, joined Peter Moore, corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division, on stage to announce a barrage of new game titles coming to the Xbox 360 and Windows Vista platforms.
Microsoft announced that it will have 160 Xbox 360 titles by end of 2006. The stunningly smooth high-definition graphics and sophisticated level of gameplay in these titles are proof positive that the development community is hitting its stride with the console's powerful hardware and programming tools.
Microsoft also offer a trailer for Halo 3, the next game in that very popular series. You can see the trailer here on the Bungie website. The official E3 blog has more about the Microsoft press conference.
Water Cooler Games has a post about Bodypad, a specialty fighting simulator. Bodypad includes movement sensors that you attach to your arms and legs. When the movement sensors are attached your video game character will punch or kick in unison with your actual punches and kicks. The Bodypad's faq says once you are used to the device you will be able to mimic kicks and punches effortlessly:
3- Mimic your characters moves and get really into your game!
After a few hours: you have completely forgotten the BODYPAD sensors... you just have "kata" and techniques that you fight your adversaries with...
You can launch any blow by mimicking the gestures on screen!
Of course you are not obliged to make a somersault or to be an expert into martial arts: starting up a move is usually enough to trigger it in the game.
Bodypad has a PlayStation and an Xbox version. You can find a list of compatible games here.
A recent Stuff magazine article said that video blogs are a possibility with the next edition of the PlayStation.
While it's impossible to tire of shooting someone in the face with a virtual shotgun, such childish activities might only be a minority aspect of your next-gen online experience -- we hear the PS3 will apparently even let you video blog and create a personal page for friends to read.
The word comes from reputable US mag, Playstation Magazine, which says Sony is planning an advanced PS3 "lifestyle server" that'll let friends tap into your multimedia diary even when your machine’s switched off.
Social networks and video blogging tools are growing by leaps and bounds on the Internet these days. BloggersBlog.com explains:
It has been a trend with the video game consoles and portables to include more and more media devices like MP3 players, dvd players, etc. It it a logical transition for these devices to allow gamers to create video blogs and build communities. The PS3 will not be out until November -- a recent announcement said it would be delayed. Microsoft has been building an Xbox Live community and Nintendo is expected to offer similar features in the next generation of the Nintendo system called Revolution.
The game systems may eventually even need their own virtual worlds to compete with online games like World of Warcraft and Second Life.
Ballmer Says Microsoft Ready to Profit From PlayStation Delay
CNN reports that Microsoft's Steve Ballmer says Microsoft is ready to capitalize on the recent delay announced by Sony. Sony says the PlayStation 3 will not ship until November given Microsoft ample time to sell its Xbox 360 console. Ballmer also says they are making Xbox 360s as fast as they can and wans to be the "first guy" to sell 10 million consoles.
"In every other generation, the first guy to 10 million consoles was the number one seller in the generation," Ballmer told FORTUNE in an interview on Thursday afternoon. "Did we just get an even better opportunity to be the first guy to 10 million? Yeah, of course we did."
But Microsoft will not formally revise its projected market share for the Xbox 360, and it will not speed up production to capitalize on Sony's delay, because it's already producing the Xbox as fast as possible. "We've been saying 'make them faster' before yesterday," says Ballmer.
When the Xbox 360 launched last holiday season, Microsoft had its own missteps. Shortages led to sales of only 600,000 systems from the debut on November 22 through December 31, far fewer than Microsoft and market analysts expected.
There is still a production bottleneck because of problems with a component vendor, whom Ballmer declined to name, but he expects Microsoft to sell 5 million systems by June. "We're sort-of on track," he says, "though it would've been nice at Christmas to have one for everyone who wanted one."
It definitely gives the Xbox 360 a big head start and it puts more pressure on the new consoles from Sony and Nintendo to be really good.
The BBC reports that Sony is delaying the launch of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) until November. The BBC said Sony blames the delays on the console's Blu-ray disc drive.
Sony had been aiming for a spring launch for the successor to best-selling PlayStation 2.
The news was announced at a hastily-convened news conference, after reports of a delay appeared in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Japan's main financial daily newspaper.
The reports had triggered a 1.8% drop in Sony's shares to 5,470 yen ($46.56; £26.67) on the Tokyo market.
The PS3 is one of three new gaming consoles promising cutting edge processing and graphical power.
It is hard to see how this delay won't give at least a slight advantage to the Xbox which released the Xbox 360 last year. There was a shortage for the Xbox 360 that angered gamers but now they new Xbox 360 will have a prolonged time period to stand alone with no new competition from Sony or Nintentdo.
Varietyreports that a deal has been cut that will bring Vin Diesel to both game systems and the big screen in a role as an expert driver in the Wheelman
In one of the biggest partnerships to date between a vidgame publisher and a studio, MTV Films and Paramount are developing Midway Games' "The Wheelman" as a feature film.
Plan is to release the pic and the game simultaneously; Vin Diesel is signed on to star in and produce both.
"Wheelman" is an action-adventure title about an expert driver who comes out of retirement to protect a woman from his past.
ParPar and MTV Films bought the rights from Midway, which is already well into development on the game for next generation consoles Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Budget is believed to be north of $15 million -- on the high end for videogames.
Variety says the game and film will be released simultaneously sometime in late 2007. Midway will produce the game with the big $15 million budget and MTV will provide the game's soundtrack and sell ads within the game according to the article. The game will be available for Xbox 360 and PS3 game systems. GameSpot also has an article about the Wheelman project.
A BBC article describes Black from Electronic Arts as "big, dumb and full of guns." Black is a first-person shooter that focuses blowing things up and offers a wide array of weapons to choose from.
There is a reason the developers describe Black as "gun porn".
In this four-course feast for the explosion-starved, players fill the hobnails of Jack Kellar, part of the world's most brutal strike force, as he hunts down an ex-CIA operative in the Eastern Bloc.
But just as Burnout threw realism to the wind in favour of pulse-pounding carnage, so Black is devoid of any real strategy, puzzles or needlessly complicated plot.
Instead it favours the most lethal cocktail of weapons ever seen in a game and with the emphasis on blowing up anything that moves.
In fact, even if it does not move, you can pretty much reduce it to rubble, as in the Red Faction game.
The game should provide a lot of action since Black, the covert group your character has joined, is the world's most brutal and enigmatic strike force. Black works for the U.S. but it answers to no one and operates in complete anonymity. More information about the game can be found on the official website and on
Amazon.com's pages for the Xbox and PS2 versions. The game is expected on stores on April 11th.
The NPD Group has reported the bestselling titles of 2005. Most of the games were for the Playstation 2 game system. Electronic Arts developed half of the top ten bestselling titles in 2005.

How similar will the list for 2006 be? With the next versions of Nintendo and the Playstation pushed back to November we will probably see a few Xbox 360 titles make the list.
Sega has an online mini version of Super Monkey Ball. You have to carefully guide Aiai, the monkey inside the ball, through each floor without rolling him over the edge. The trick to keeping the floor level is to watch the level guides on the right side and bottom of the screen. There are nine floors in the mini game. We know Chad is so into Super Monkey Ball Deluxe but he probably likes this mini as well. (Via Hedonistica)
A Gamespot.com article has a quote from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata saying Revolution will be released in North America by Thanksgiving. Keep in mind that Gamespot says the speculation has been Revolution won't be out until 2007.
n an interview featured in today's edition of Japanese newspaper Sankei Shinbun, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated, "We can't disclose the Revolution's release period yet, but we have no plans to miss out on the year-end sales battle. As for North America, we need to release it by Thanksgiving, or otherwise we won't receive support from the retail industry. So the Revolution will be released prior to that period."
Iwata avoided any specific comments about how much the Revolution would cost. However, he reiterated that the console will be reasonably priced. "The amount of money that people are willing to spend on videogames is getting less every year," he said. "Even if it's a superb machine, it's not going to sell if it's 50,000 yen ($434). We plan to make [the Revolution] an affordable price."
As for the PS3, Next-Gen.biz has an article that says PS3 won't be out until November and will only launch with a million units. That sounds like a definite holiday shortage disaster scenario just like we saw with the Xbox 360 over the holidays.
Quoted in Interactive Investor today, Evan Wilson of Pacific Crest Securities, said that PS3 will "most likely" be released in November with 1 million units, followed by a European launch in March 2007. He said the Japanese launch would also be backed by about a million units this summer.
Wired reports that Sony is using graffiti drawings of urban kids playing with PSPs to promote the PSP brand. Wired says Sony is paying the buildings owners to put graffiti on their walls. The campaign may have gone over just find if it were not for the fact that Sony had recently infected people who purchased Sony music CDs with spyware. This was all over the blogosphere recently in case you missed it. The Wired article discuss some graffiti criticism coming out of San Francisco.
Coming on the heels of widely publicized news that Sony music CDs infected customers' computers with security-hole-inducing spyware, the campaign for the PlayStation Portable is being derided on the internet as an attempt to buy the credibility of street art.
In San Francisco, critics have expressed their disapproval by adding some spray paint of their own to the Sony ads. On a wall outside a beer garden in San Francisco's bohemian Mission District that caters to motorcyclists and bike messengers, someone spray-painted over every character, adding the commentary, "Advertising directed at your counter-culture."
Outside Casa Maria, a small Mission bodega, someone wrote, "Get out of my city," added the word "Fony" to the graffiti and penned a four-line ditty slamming Sony.
Other cities targeted in the campaign include New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Miami, according to Sony spokeswoman Molly Smith.
The Guardian's Gamesblog says the campaign is also not going over well in Philadelphia. Sony has been hit with a cease-and-desist order in this city and the graffiti is being painted over.
Sega Offers Online Mini Game for Latest Hedgehog Adventure
There is a cool online mini game available for the new Shadow the Hedgehog game from Sega which features a tough, gun-toting hedgehog. However, Kotaku questions Shadow's gun carrying ways:
There is something SO wrong about Shadow with a gun though -- on the loading screen, Shadow cocks his gun, and the sound is just so not something I want to associate with collecting rings and bouncing on platforms. Magic, slingshots, rotten tomatoes ... why guns??
The gun, which does seem a little out of place as a hedgehog weapon, is acceptable because the hedgehog character in this game has a dark past.
Shadow awakens with amnesia and is tormented by a dark past as he struggles to unveil his true identity. Was he created to save humankind or to do the evil bidding of the dark side? Only by collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds will Shadow unlock the truth. Caught in a complex battle between aliens, the G.U.N. army, and Dr. Eggman, Shadow becomes the very element that may tip the scales between good and evil forever. The epic is set…and the path that Shadow will ultimately take is completely up to you!
Rapper 50 Cent has loaded his upcoming video game called 50 Cent Bulletproof with 50 Cent music including some new songs. MTV News says the game will include 53 songs from 50 Cent.
Capping off a November of expanded horizons that has him making his big-screen acting debut, 50 Cent will also star in his own video game. "50 Cent: Bulletproof" for PlayStation 2 and Xbox will let players blast bullets through the streets of New York, with G-Unit at their side. Written by Terry Winter, whose credits include "The Sopranos," "Bulletproof" depicts what the game's creators say is a scenario that could have played out if 50 hadn't gotten into music. The action is full of enough brutal kills that the game easily racked up an M rating.
But aside from letting players indulge 50 in his less gentle side, the game will serve as the closest thing 50 has released to a box set. Topped with three tracks recorded exclusively for the game, "Bulletproof" will also include 10 exclusive remixes to songs that have only appeared on 50's mixtapes. Also in the game are songs from 50's official albums and more than a dozen 50 and G-Unit videos.
The official track count is 53 songs from 50, 20 from G-Unit, 10 from Lloyd Banks, 10 from Young Buck and four from Tony Yayo, plus 47 tracks from DJ Sha Money XL and 15 videos from 50 and G-Unit. The entire collection is available to players at any point in the game; all gamers have to do is have 50 access his G-Pod.
It sounds like the game should attract fans of 50 Cent's music. Hopefully they won't try any promotions like this one. 50 Cent: Bulletproof for the PS2 and Xbox is due in stores on November 22nd. More information can be found on the official game website and on Amazon.com. Our last entry on the 50 Cent game can be found here.

Rockstar's problems from the explicit sex acts that were
hidding inside Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas seem to be
increasing each day. The BBC reports that the U.S. House of Representatives
has voted 355 to 21 to pass House Resolution 376 which calls for a federal inquiry to determine if Rockstar intentionally deceived the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) to avoid an Adults-Only rating. The bill was introduced by Congressman Fred Upton (R - MI).
"The release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was widely anticipated, but an adults-only rating would have severely limited its sales in retail outlets," said Congressman Fred Upton of Michigan.
"It appears that the publisher has blatantly circumvented the rules in order to peddle sexually explicit material to our youth, and they should be held accountable. A company cannot be allowed to profit from deceit."
The vote follows calls by US senator Hillary Clinton for an investigation into who put the sex scenes into San Andreas.
Some steps have already been taken against GTA: San Andreas.
The ESRB changed the rating
from Mature (M) to Adults-Only (AO). Major retailers including
Wal-Mart, Target and Circuit City have pulled the game from shelves.
The GTA incident started when a game modification called
Hot Coffee appeared on the Internet that allowed the sex scenes to
be viewed.
Rockstar's parent company, New York-based Take Two Interactive Software Inc., has admitted that the explicit sex scenes in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas were built-in to the game by Rockstar programmers. Rockstar's statement came after the scenes were found in a PS2 version of the game. Rockstar said the company had not intended the scenes to be viewable by players. The scenes are in the PC, Xbox and PlayStation2 version of the games. The company had previously stated that a modification was created by hackers. However, many bloggers and gamers did not believe the company's report about the modification. MSNBC.com also reports that the video game industry rating board, the ESRB, has changed the rating for the game from Mature (M) to Adults Only (AO).
Take-Two spokesman Jim Ankner acknowledged in an Associated Press interview that the questioned scenes were created by Rockstar programmers. "The editing and finalization of any game is a complicated task and it's not uncommon for unused and unfinished content to remain on the disc," he said.
In a statement, the president of the Entertainment Software Rating Board said the sex scenes were programmed by Rockstar "to be inaccessible to the player."
But ESRB chief Patricia Vance also acknowledged that the "credibility and utility" of the industry-run board’s initial "M" rating had been "seriously undermined."
Many retailers sell "M" rated games, which "may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older,” according to the Entertainment Software Rating Board, but won’t sell "AO"-labeled games at all.
Some blogger discussions on the news can be found here, here, here, here and here. A Technorati search also brings up many more blog entries.
A 13-year-old girl in South Africa has done a research project on "Playstation Thumb" that has been picked up by the BBC. The BBC reports that Safura Abdool Karim studied 120 of her classmates and determined that 45 of them played regularly. Of these 45 regular players, 15 reported Playstation thumb symptoms which included blisters, numbness and tingling in the thumb. Fortunately, Safura will never ever have to worry about getting Playstation thumb:
She said she herself did not own a PlayStation because they were a "waste of time."
It sounds like an absurd question -- will a future gaming system run
on a computer as powerful as the human brain? However, Ian Pearson,
head of the futurology unit at BT Labs in England,
recently toldThe Observer that it might be possible.
Pearson says the PlayStation 3 is already 1 percent
as powerful as the human brain. Pearson also notes that the PS3
is 35 times more powerful than the PS2. So if this trend
continues then maybe you do eventually end up with a system as
powerful as the human brain. Enjoy these days of easily beating the computer while they last.
He believes that today's youngsters may never have to die, and
points to the rapid advances in computing power demonstrated
last week, when Sony released the first details of its
PlayStation 3. It is 35 times more powerful than previous
games consoles. 'The new PlayStation is 1 per cent as powerful
as a human brain,' he said. 'It is into supercomputer status
compared to 10 years ago. PlayStation 5 will probably be as
powerful as the human brain.'
The Xbox 360 display on MTV may have kicked off the consule war but
PlayStation and Nintendo intend on joining the battle. Sony has shown off
its PlayStation 3 system, which runs on a powerful new computer that Sony
dubs "a supercomputer for computer entertainment."
Joystiq and the BBC have more on this system including specs. Other good resources on the PS3 include The Unofficial PS3 webblog and Wikipedia's P3 entry. The BBC says the PS3 will not be out until Spring 2006. Meanwhile, Nintendo is
showing off its new game system, the Nintendo Revolution (pictured on
right). USA Today describes Revolution in a recent article:
Nintendo, whose GameCube sales have lagged, hopes to gain ground, particularly among the fast-growing older-gaming market. Revolution is about the size of a stack of three DVD cases and has no visible knobs, buttons or ports for joysticks. The system will use only wireless controllers, and it sits flat or stands vertically.
With its front-loading slot for discs, it will play games on full-size DVDs as well as older GameCube games on mini-DVDs. Like Xbox and PlayStation 2, it will play DVD movies.
Nintendo, which mostly ignored the Net with GameCube, also is catching up with the online wave. Revolution will offer broadband access to a free Internet-based player matching service, similar to Xbox Live, that also will have downloadable versions of nearly every Nintendo game — from arcade classic Donkey Kong through current titles such as Mario Sunshine. (Nintendo hasn't decided whether downloading will be free.)
Majesco has announced a deal to publish an Aeon Flux video game for the Xbox and Playstation2. Aeon Flux is a new film from MTV Films and Paramount Pictures that will star actress Charlize Theron as Aeon Flux. The film is based on an animated series that ran on MTV from 1992-1997 and will be released this fall. Aeon Flux is set 400 years in the future, when disease has wiped out the majority of the earth's population except for one walled, protected city-state, Bregna, ruled by a congress of scientists. Theron plays Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron), the top operative in an underground rebellion. Majesco also announced that it is working on a BloodRayne game for the PSP. BloodRayne is being developed by Full Fat and will make its handheld debut this fall. BloodRayne is Majesco's popular vampire/human character. She is blessed with the powers of a vampire but cursed with the unquenchable thirst for blood and a weakness to sunlight.
Gamers and bloggers are speculating and gossiping (sometimes with legitimate scoop) about what the next versions of game systems, like the Xbox2 and Playstation 3, will be like.
A recent GameSpot.com article looks at ongoing web gossip including rumored pictures of mock-ups and rumored features on the next Xbox. While GameSpot.com did label a Playstation 3 mock-up as bogus they were unable to confirm or deny the customizable Xbox 360 gossip recently reported by Kotaku. Kotaku reported that an exclusive source told them the
next Xbox will be called the Xbox 360 and the consule "is a sleek silver device worthy of countertop
display, and features an inhaled design that turns the harsh
angles of the original Xbox into sweeps and curves. The device
will also be able to stand upright or on it’s side, much like the Playstation 2. The side of the 360° is dominated by an oversized, back-lit power button called the ring of light, and the rest of the case can be customized with colorful designer face plates that pop on and off." Sounds cool if it's true...
If fitness is one of your new year's resolutions and you also like playing video games you may be in luck.
The Baltimore Sunreports that some recently released games combine workouts with game technology.
A recent release from Yourself!Fitness features Maya, a computer-generated instructor that will coach
you through over 500 unique exercises integrating popular fitness equipment. Yourself!Fitness is available on the Xbox and PC and will be out for the PS2 in February. Another fitness software package for the PC,
called Wild Divine, combines ancient breathing and meditation with modern biofeedback technology. The Baltimore Sun also mentions a PlayStation game called Dance Dance Revolution that lets you get a
workout as you learn to dance. These types of games might be able to find an audience if they can add a little
interactivity and positive feedback to exercise tapes and DVDs that can get boring after constant use.
If you have waited until now to buy the sleeker new version of
PlayStation 2 you may waited too long. Sony claims the demand was more than they anticipated. "Consumer demand for the new PlayStation 2 has
exceeded our expectations, and
we are doing all we can to fulfill the wish lists of people who want a new
PlayStation 2 unit under their tree this holiday season," Sony said in a
prepared statement. However, a story in the New York Times
suggests that there might be a manufacturing problem at Sony.
Retailers are concerned a lack of PlayStation 2's could slow
sales of games as well. An article from The Times (UK) says that
"it is difficult to know whether this is a real corporate crisis or a stunt
to boost demand for the product." But in the same news story the Times
also points out how a tanker in the Suez Canal has stalled some ships including one carrying PS2s headed for England. Also, sales in England
have slowed dramatically over the past few weeks, from 70,000 per week sold
in November to only 6,000 sold last week -- so there does appear to be a
major lack of supply. Sales of the new PS2 on eBay are reported to be climbing.
PlayStation, which earlier this year sold its 100 millionth PlayStation,
has been the dominate game system for over a decade
BBC News reports in a recent article. A recent survey suggested
that half of game system buyers will be purchasing a PlayStation 2
gaming system this holiday season -- so the dominance by
Sony's PlayStation will continue into 2005. Xbox, however, is
looking like a strong contender for second place and a challenge
to PlayStation as the Halo 2 game drives up sales for Microsoft.
Part of the success of PlayStation has been the wide variety of games and the trend of gaming towards
adults and not just kids. PlayStation managed to grow up with
its players and keep them hooked while continuing to appeal to new
young gamers at the same time. Guardian games blogger Aleks
Krotoski told the BBC, "PlayStation introduced the idea that gaming
can be for grown-ups."
The costs for gaming systems like the Xbox and the Playstation 2 are fairly straightforward -- generally around
$150 plus extra costs for items like extra controllers and memory cards. However, for PC Gaming the costs can be much higher. Many manufacturers like Dell, Compaq, Gateway, ABS Computer Technologies, Voodoo PC and Alienware offer PCs designed specifically for playing games. Many of these PCs start in the $1,000 - $1,700 range. However, with add-ons the costs can quickly run up to over $3,000. Rob Pegoraro of the Washington Post just reported that, "Dell told me in September that while its XPS line of gamer desktops started around $1,800, buyers often custom-configure enough upgrades to push their final bills past $3,000."
Gamers that enhance their PCs often find the extra costs worth the
performance boost and many gamers love the cool, sleek systems offered
by niche game computer manufacturers.
But novices should read and consult with experts before embarking on a costly upgrade or buying an expensive new system. Some gamers without superior geek know-how have been using services like Best Buy's Geek Squad for installing new hardware or getting their PC ready for online games as ShoppingBlog.com recently reported. Marc Saltzman also has a good article on Microsoft.com about buying a PC game system without breaking the bank. And Extreme Tech has an article about building the $800 Game PC for those interested in really restraining costs.
