Mario and Sonic Compete at the Olympics

Mario and SonicSega and Nintendo have announced that two big video game characters Mario and Sonic are teaming up for a game called Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. The game will be available for the Wii and Nintendo DS in time for this year's holidays.
Published by SEGA across Europe and North America, and published by Nintendo in the Japanese market, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games will be available for Holiday 2007 and is licensed through a worldwide partnership with International Sports Multimedia (ISM), the exclusive interactive entertainment software licensee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, players will compete in events that take place in environments based on the official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Using a supporting cast of characters from the amazing worlds of both Mario and Sonic, gamers will be able to compete as or against a range of lovable personalities including Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, Tails and more. Innovative usage of the Wii and DS control systems to maneuver a favorite character will allow players to race the likes of Mario and Sonic down the 100m track, engage in exhilarating rallies in table tennis and churn water in a swimming heat, all while competing for the much sought after gold medal.

"We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on this groundbreaking title," said Hisao Oguchi, President and Chief Operating Officer, SEGA Corporation. "For the first time, two of the world's greatest games' characters come together to compete in the world's greatest sporting event and we couldn't be more excited."

"Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games," says Shigeru Miyamoto, Senior Managing Director and General Manager, Entertainment Analysis and Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.. "In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"
There's no way Mario is faster than Sonic but it should be interesting to see how the competition between the two super game characters unfolds and what games they are able to compete in. A website for the game can be found here -- although there is little information there so far.

Barbara St. Hilaire Wins Nintendo Coolest Grandparent Contest

Nintendo GrandmaSome extremely cool grandparents competed recently in a Nintendo video game competition at the Nintendo World store in Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Barbara St. Hilaire of Mantua, Ohio was been crowned "Nintendo's Coolest Grandparent of the Year" after winning the competition, which was held in honor of Grandparents Day. Barbara, 70, defeated other grandparents in a competition of Brain Age, a Nintendo DS title that Nintendo says is popular among baby boomers and seniors.

Barbara Hilaire left with several prizes. A grandmother of 13, Barbara won two Nintendo DS Lite systems and 10 DS games to play with her family. We are guessing that's one of Barbara's grandkids in the picture holding the bag of Nintendo prizes. Barbara has been playing video games since 1975.

"I'm amazed I won! I didn't think I was that good," said Barbara. "I play with my 13 grandkids and they are all gamers. It's a lot of fun."

Make Sushi With Nintendo DS

Nintendo SushiNew Launches reports that the Nintendo DS has other uses besides gaming. Apparently, there is sfotware in Japan that can turn the Nintendo DS into a cooking tutorial. The software, called the Nintendo DS Cooking Navigator, comes with over 200 Japanese recipes, including sushi recipes.
It is voice activated so once you select a receipe for every step there will be a voice prompt along with pictures. For eg - The DS will tell you "add oil to the pan" and once you say "ok" it will move to the next step, of course right now it supports Japanese only. But would you use your precious DS Lite in the kitchen and put it in harms way. To the rescue is Play Stand made by Hori corp Japan which will hold your DS firmly. You can also adjust the height and tilt it according to your convinience.
Lunabeam points to this thread about someone making sweet and sour pork with the Nintendo DS. There doesn't seem to be information on when the Cooking Navigator will be released internationally but more blogs are covering the subject here, here, here, here, here, here and here.

Sudoku Comes to Nintendo DS

Sudoku GridmasterA new Nintendo DS game called Sudoku Gridmaster makes it easy for Sudoku lovers to take Sudoku puzzles on the road. Here is some information about the game from the press release.
"The Nintendo DS touch-screen controls make it easy for players to write, change and save their answers," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Sudoku Gridmaster is one of the many ways Nintendo is getting new audiences involved in video games."

Sudoku Gridmaster contains four levels of difficulty, giving sudoku novices and experts alike a variety of challenging puzzles. Players use logic to fill a grid with numbers. It sounds simple, but its addictive nature has helped to make sudoku one of the most popular puzzle games in the world. Sudoku Gridmaster also adds some features to enhance the experience in ways not possible when doing the puzzle on paper. With a touch, players can highlight an entire row or column. Or they can highlight all instances of numbers at once. And of course, a grid can be saved for hours or days before the player plays again.
The press release also said that Sudoku Gridmaster is one of the first titles in Nintendo's new Touch Generations brand, which "highlights titles with appeal beyond core gamers." That's true. You wouldn't think of Sudoku first as a video game like you would Halo or Tetris. But you also wouldn't think of Monopoly or Bridge as a video games and yet versions of them and many other board, puzzle and card games have been made into popular video games. There is a market for electronic versions of games that have been played by generations in a non-digital format. Touch Generations also produces Nintendogs, which sold over a million copies. More information about Sudoku Gridmaster can be found on the Nintendo.com and on Amazon.com.

Are You Ready for Some Manga Football?

Eyeshield 21A Japanese version of football for the Nintendo DS called Eyeshield 21 looks like a Manga version of American football. An entry on Wired Game|Life blog says the game is based on a popular manga comic about a fictional "big-eyed football playing youth." Wired also says the genre description is listed as "sports action RPG." The Anime News Network has more details about the character the game is based on:
Kobayakawa Sena is a little guy who always get picked on by the bullies in school. Since elementary school, he always play the role of the 'errand boy' to the extent that he has become swift and fast in his movements. Coincidentally, Hiruma Youichi and Kurita Ryukan are looking for a fast running back for their American Football team (Amefuto) and want to put Sena in the team. To hide their new 'star' player from the eyes of other High Schools, Hiruma encases Sena in a Amefuto helmet with a dark visor and name him Eyeshield #21.
So that explains the giant green visor the character is wearing.

Nintendo Sells 10 Million Nintendo DS Units

The Associated Press reports that Nintendo has sold over ten million Nintendo DS devices worldwide. About 4 million units were sold in North America.
Perrin Kaplan, vice president for marketing at Nintendo's U.S. headquarters in Redmond, said the company sold about 3 million of the handheld gaming gadgets to North American consumers in 2005. That's on top of 1.2 million sold to North American consumers in 2004, following the system's late November launch.

Rival Sony Corp. said it has sold 3.2 million of its handheld game system, the PlayStation Portable, in North America between its March launch and mid-December. The company did not yet have sales figures through the end of 2005.

Nintendo also said Tuesday that it sold 4.6 million of its other popular handheld gaming system, the Game Boy Advance, to North American consumers in 2005. That's a drop from 7.58 million in 2004.
Nintendo also said that over 500,000 people are using its recently launched Wi-Fi service for the Nintendo DS.

Mario and Ronald McDonald Kick Off Nintendo Wi-Fi Service

Mario and Ronald McDonald in a McDonald's restaurant in Chicago kicked off the debut of the Nintendo Wi-Fi service that will be available in McDonald's restaurants. The first game available for Nintendo's Wi-Fi network is the Mario Kart DS game.
The Mario Kart franchise has sold more than 11.1 million games in the United States alone. Mario Kart DS offers racers more than 30 courses, including classic tracks from Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Favorite Nintendo characters cruise in dozens of classic and custom karts as they use weapons like bananas, bombs, lightning and squid ink to gain a competitive advantage.

When racing using a wireless local area connection, up to eight players can play, even if only one of them has a Mario Kart DS game card. When using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, up to four players across the world can join a race. Friends share their DS Friend Code to find one another online using their friend roster.
Nintendo says that gamers can find Wi-Fi connections at NintendoWiFi.com. Hopefully it will work as easily as Nintendo describes.

Expect a great many more deals like the Nintendo-McDonald's Restaurant deal as mobile gaming continues to grow in popularity. Gamespot has more on the product launch. More information on the Mario Kart DS game can be found here on the official website and here on Amazon.com.

Gamers Can Play Lawyer or Surgeon on Nintendo DS

A Wired article discusses a couple Nintendo DS games that offer gamers the opportunity to experience different professions. In Trauma Center: Under the Knife you play the role of a surgeon battling an epidemic and in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney you take the role of a defense lawyer. Here is what Wired said about Trauma Center.
The entire game is played with the DS' stylus input. The patient's chest appears on screen, and you select your different instruments -- scalpel, forceps, sutures and more -- using small icons on the left and right side of the screen.

As you perform each task, you're graded on your surgical precision. The difficulty level of Trauma Center skyrockets after the first few operations.

By way of advice, common-sense notions about the human body do not apply. Example: One patient's aneurysms kept bursting (game over) until they were just sliced away, leaving arteries ripped in half. Not a drop of blood came out.
The Wired article says it is a "bit disappointing that neither provides an especially realistic take on the subject matter" but to be an enjoyable game it probably requires stripping some of the realism away. Better to go straight to the action of the surgery or the trial than to deal with the minutiae of surgery prep or reading legal briefs.

Nintendo Times DS Price Drop With Nintendogs Launch

Nintendo has announced a $20 price drop for its hand-held Nintendo DS video game system. Starting August 21, Nintendo DS will sell at an MSRP of $129.99. The price drop comes a day ahead of the launch of Nintendogs on August 22nd. Nintendogs is a lifelike puppy simulator made only for Nintendo DS. Nintendogs was a big hit in Japan, selling over 700,000 copies. From this description of the game on Amazon.com Nintendogs sounds a little ridiculous -- but it definitely sounds like something kids will enjoy.
In this game choose from Labrador Retriever, Miniature Schnauzer, Toy Poodle, Corgi, Miniature Pinscher or Shiba! Nintendogs lets you pick a puppy from a variety of breeds available at the beginning of the game. As you start spending time with your pup you can throw flying discs and balls to improve the pup's agility. You can bathe it when it gets dirty and use your own personal voice commands to train the dog to do tricks. If you train it well enough, your dog will excel in obedience and agility trials and disc competitions, which will earn money that you can use to buy other supplies and puppy breeds. When you earn enough cash, you can buy even more puppies to live with the original pup. Players can socialize their pups by walking them around the town, where they will meet neighborhoods dogs, and maybe even find new toys. Trips to the park and gym offer valuable training time to prepare for agility trials and disc competitions. Over time, the pup's stamina will increase so players can explore rather and farther. Players can interact wirelessly with their friends' Nintendogs - they can set their DS to bark whenever another puppy is within wireless range.
