Habbo Hotel to Offer Mobile Version

Habbo HotelHabbo Hotel is a persistent online hotel world that lets people create a room in the hotel, decorate the room with Habbo furniture, adopt pets and hang out with other Habbos.
Habbo Hotel is a virtual five star Hotel. You can hang out with friends, meet hundreds of people, create your own room and decorate it however you like and yes, you can even bounce around on a bright red rubber ball!

It's completely free to 'check in' and once you've registered, you can chill with your friends, meet new ones or take part in a wide variety of activities and competitions. Habbo has been designed for 14 to 20 year olds in the UK, but everyone's welcome!
GigaOM reports that Sulake, the developer of Habbo, has raised nearly $8 million to create a mobile version of Habbo. GigaOM forecasts a bright future for Sulake thanks to cell phones.
Sulake can stand to make significant money off porting Habbo to cell phones. The company plans to work with handset manufacturers, to preinstall the mobile community, carriers, to boost mobile portal traffic, and other entertainment brands to distribute content wirelessly. A Habbo-themed handset could even be in order–Habbo MVNO? It's such a good idea that combined with the success of the Internet site, a company exec said Sulake is planning an IPO at the end of next year.

One reason Habbo Hotel will likely be so successful on the mobile, is because its virtual-only animations and avatars, exclude some of the real-world problems associated with a MySpace-style social network. It's the same thing with Cyworld, Korea's mostly virtual world, which has also been successful on mobile.
It certainly is not as sophisticated as Second Life but it might be interesting as a virtual social network. There is a whole crowd of teens on MySpace, Facebook and Bebo that might eventually start looking for something new.

Gamers Hope For Xbox Portables

Xbox Portable Mock UpWill Microsoft ever bite the bullet and develop and release an Xbox Portable device? Team Xbox has created a mock-up for an Xbox Portable. Some of the features hoped for include bluetooth, music player, video, Zune media download store, camera (VGA resolution), camera (Megapixel+ resolution), IM and E-mail and Live Anywhere. Unfortunately, Team Xbox believe it will be difficult for Microsoft to cheaply bring Xbox features to a portable device.
Putting together the required silicon to offer an Xbox experience on a handheld will be a difficult task for whoever designs this portable console, not because of a technology barrier, but because of prices. With the Nintendo DS costing as low as $129.99, and the Sony PSP selling for $199.99, Microsoft will have a hard time bringing the Xbox console to a handheld device at a price lower than $300. The only way people could pay for an Xbox Portable more than what the DS and the PSP cost would be if Microsoft offered with the XP something its competitor can’t; not hardware specs so much as software and services.
A Daily Tech post offers a good summary of Team Xbox's Xbox Portable vision.
Team Xbox envisions a system with a QWERTY keyboard, directional pad, trackball and four action buttons. The article then goes on to examine a wide variety of handheld devices on the market (Sidekick 3, QTek 9000, OQO 01+, etc.) and describes what features that Microsoft could possibly emulate when coming up with its own portable gaming unit. As for the hardware choices, there are a number of possibilities for a processor including Transmeta's Efficeon and XScale (which Intel recently sold off to Marvell). Here's Team Xbox's take on the graphics for the XP:

Of its entire technical specifications, it is worth highlighting that the nVIDIA GoForce 5500 is the first handheld GPU to playback and encode H.264, WMV9 and MPEG-4 video up to 720 X 480 (NTSC) and 720 X 576 (PAL) resolution at 30 frames per second with 24-bit surround sound, making the GoForce 5500 compatible with major mobile TV standards, and capable of both recording and decoding video at DVD-quality. The GoForce 5500 also offers digital photography features, including multi-shot capabilities with support up to 10 Megapixel resolution digital still images.
Kotaku points to modders who have created a large Xbox portable. You can see how it was made here. Nice try. Now, if only they could make it about five times smaller.

Paris Hilton's Name Quest

Paris Hilton Diamond QuestEarly reports indicated that Paris Hilton announced her new game at the E3 Expo by the wrong name. New stories here and here say Paris Hilton called the game Diamond Quest instead of Jewel Jam -- even though she was surrounded by Jewel Jam logos and promotional materials at her table at E3.
Wearing a green minidress and red platform pumps, Hilton made a brief appearance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo to promote "Paris Hilton's Jewel Jam."

"Sorry I'm late," the heiress said. "I'm really excited to have my new video game, 'Diamondquest.' Thank you all for coming, and you can download the game," she said.

After Hilton arrived, men in business suits jockeyed for space with reporters and computer geeks as she sat at a table posing for photographers while signing autographs.
However, E Online reports that Gameloft says the name of the game was meant to be Diamond Quest all along.
One problem--the promotional materials plastered all over Hilton's booth touted the game as Paris Hilton's Jewel Jam, not Diamond Quest, leading to speculation that perhaps the socialite hadn't bothered to learn her lines before showing up at E3.

On Friday, a publicist for Gameloft tried to back Hilton up, saying that Diamond Quest was one of several names being bandied about for the game before the company settled on Jewel Jam. Moments later, the rep called back, this time insisting that the game's name had been changed to Paris Hilton Diamond Quest from Gameloft just moments before her announcement, despite the slew of promo materials to the contrary. Jewel Jam, the rep claimed, was simply a working title.

The name of the cell phone-based game seems to be an ongoing point of confusion for the game purveyor.

In a May 5 release, Gameloft announced that the game was called Paris Hilton's Jewelry Case, while the official E3 Website has it listed as Paris Hilton's Jewl (yes, "Jewl") Jam.

With all the misinformation out there, it's impressive Hilton was able to produce the correct name when it came time, particularly since all the game-related info at her booth clearly referred to Paris Hilton's Jewel Jam.
Did Paris flub or did she manage to call the game by the right name despite being surrounded by Jewel Jam marketing materials? I guess we will never really know. It is definitely going to be called Diamond Quest now anyway so it doesn't really matter. This is good because Diamond Quest is the better name anyway as the Pleasant Morning Buzz suggests. A press release from Gameloft confirms the Diamond Quest name and describes the mobile game that will debut in June.
Paris Hilton's Diamond Quest is the first official mobile game featuring the dazzling socialite. The objective, in this simple yet addictive gameplay, is to solve exciting, frantic puzzles based on an easy concept: switch around stunning diamonds in a grid to line up identical gems and - depending on the challenge or mode - beat the high score in a given time. With more than sixty levels and six different modes - including the fun and original "Diamonds are Forever," "Fortune Telling," and "Forget Me Not" - Paris Hilton's Diamond Quest will keep players of all kinds glued to their mobile phones for hours at a time. As an added bonus, photos of Paris herself will be revealed, and the star will regularly show up to guide, help, and challenge you as the game goes on. Even Tinkerbell, her celebrity dog, will make a surprise appearance! Paris Hilton's Diamond Quest will be launched in June 2006 across 150 carriers worldwide in over 70 countries reaching 1 billion plus subscribers.

Even Skipping Rocks is a Video Game

These days nearly every activity and every sport you can think of is been made into a video games -- even skipping rocks across a lake. A new mobile game brings the childhood joy of skipping stones to video game form. The game, called Skipping Stone, is developed by Korean developer Gamevil. I-play has secured the rights to distribute Skipping Stone to its mobile game network. While a video game about skipping rocks doesn't sound exciting IGN says otherwise. IGN Wireless says Skipping Stone is "perhaps the most frighteningly addictive action game we've seen in months ...Skipping Stone is pure entertainment that deserves to be enjoyed on handsets everywhere." Skipping Stone is already a hugely popular mobile game in Korea. Here is i-play's description of Skipping Stone:
The object of the game is to skip a stone across the surface of a lake as many times as possible. The power gauge on the right of the screen allows the player to dose the initial power of the release of the stone. As the user releases the stone at a higher level, the stone starts jumping at a higher initial point, affecting the stone's trajectory. Subsequent skips of the stone on the water must be timed, using one-thumb presses of the key pad, in such a way as to maximize the stone's traveled distance across the lake.

Topolon Wins Mobies Game of the Year

GameSpot recently announced the winners for The Second Annual Wireless Gaming Awards, also known as The Mobies, at the CTIA Wireless 2005 conference in New Orleans. Presented by GameSpot Mobile and Wireless Gaming Review, The Mobies are designed to showcase and reward the most innovative, well designed, and technically accomplished mobile games of 2004. Awards were given in 10 mobile gaming categories, with the highest honor, the 2004 Mobile Game of the Year, awarded to G-Mode for its simple, but highly addictive puzzle game, Topolon. Here is a complete list of the winners. About Topolon, the Mobies said:
Topolon, from Japanese publisher G-Mode, is one of the most addictive and intellectually involving puzzle games ever devised, for any platform. It's not a Tetris or Dr. Mario knockoff, like half of the genre's games seem to be, although it has that same type of spark; it's not based on any board game we've heard of; and it's not currently available outside of Japan, to the best of our knowledge. Strangely, this isn't because it's too technologically advanced for US or European handsets to handle, as is the case with many other Japanese mobile games--in fact, the game's presentation is about as complicated as your average stick figure or napkin diagram. This is simply a product of mathematical and spatial genius, turned from abstraction into reality. Topolon is at once the ultimate game for casual players and the perfect choice for those seeking to be driven insane by a video game.
