Game Developers Conference Underway in San Francisco
The Game Developers Conference is currently underway in San Francisco. Gamasutra is offering live coverage of the GDC. In the video included below, PodTech's Rio Pesino speaks with Game Developers Conference Manager Jane Pinckard about the event and whether its trying to be the new E3, which used to be gaming's biggest expo. She also explains the difference between the GDC and a E3 type of event. The event most likely to replace the E3 is the E for All Expo which is to be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in October. The GDC does include the annual Game Developers Choice Awards at the conference and this year's winners will announced later today.

E for All Expo in October
We lost the E3 Expo but now we have the E for All Expo. GamePro.com says they chose the E for All Expo out of the 3000 entries they received.
More than 3000 entries were submitted on GamePro.com. The winning entry was proposed by California resident Dante Padre, who has won a trip to the E For All Expo for his submission Padre explained his inspiration behind the E for All Expo name, saying that "this show seems to be about inviting everyone to participate...they even asked gamers to create the name."
The E for All Expo, commonly considered a follow-up to the now-defunct E3 Expo, is officially endorsed by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), making it the video game industry's official go-to expo.E for All Expo will offer consumers the opportunity to test-drive the latest in games and gadgetry, as well as purchase products they enjoyed over the course of the three-day event at on-site retail facilities. Additional attractions are in the works:
high-profile videogame tournaments
job fair/networking opportunities
family-friendly offerings
the acclaimed Video Games Live concert
The Expo will also take advantage of soon-to-be-expanded LA Live area adjoining the LA Convention Center and Staples Center.
"We've witnessed a growing demand for a consumer-focused interactive entertainment show these last few years - both from consumers and from the industry," says Mary Dolaher, executive vice president of IDG World Expo. "E for All Expo will offer an unprecedented opportunity for people who share a passion for games to try before they buy - and to interact with the people who created them."
The addition of the Video Games Live Concert should add some excitement to the convention. The E for All Expo will be held from October 18-20, 2007 in the Los Angeles Convention Center. This is the same place the E3 convention used to be held.

GamePro Expo to Fill E3 Expo Vacuum
BusinessWeek is reporting on news discovered by GameSpot that IDG plans to replace the dwindling E3 Expo with a large 30,000 attendee gaming convention. The target date is October, 2007.
Speaking to Next-Gen, a clearly excited source closely related to the event (who opted to remain anonymous) all but confirmed the GamePro Expo. However, the source stopped short of complete confirmation, as official word regarding the event is very likely to surface by the end of the week [An IDG rep indicated to Next-Gen that an official announcement is due next week. - Ed].
According to GameSpot's report, the L.A. Convention and Visitors Bureau expects 30,000 attendees initially, with growth expected. E3 2006 hosted around 60,000 members of the gaming community. GamePro Expo will reportedly take place at the L.A. Convention Center, big E3's old stomping grounds, on October 18, 19 and 20, 2007.
GamePro Expo is also expected to host trade show, consumer and competitive gaming aspects, with gaming competitions possibly taking place in the Staples Center.
Earlier this year, the ESA, which ran the "old" E3, announced the virtual collapse of the event and its reformation into the E3 Media and Business Summit. As the name indicates, the event will be much more business-focused, taking place in smaller venues and hosting around 5,000 invite-only attendees.
It was weird that E3 basically backed out hosting another big convention. Hopefully, this new one from GamePro will be able to deliver. More on the possible GamePro convention here on GameSpot.com.

Barbara St. Hilaire Wins Nintendo Coolest Grandparent Contest
Some extremely cool grandparents competed recently in a Nintendo video game competition at the Nintendo World store in Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Barbara St. Hilaire of Mantua, Ohio was been crowned "Nintendo's Coolest Grandparent of the Year" after winning the competition, which was held in honor of Grandparents Day. Barbara, 70, defeated other grandparents in a competition of Brain Age, a Nintendo DS title that Nintendo says is popular among baby boomers and seniors.
Barbara Hilaire left with several prizes. A grandmother of 13, Barbara won two Nintendo DS Lite systems and 10 DS games to play with her family. We are guessing that's one of Barbara's grandkids in the picture holding the bag of Nintendo prizes. Barbara has been playing video games since 1975.
"I'm amazed I won! I didn't think I was that good," said Barbara. "I play with my 13 grandkids and they are all gamers. It's a lot of fun."

What's Up With E3?
It was recently announced by the ESA in a press release that they would be limiting the scope of the popular E3 conference. The E3 Expo was a popular event for bloggers this year and it is a shame that the ESA is changing the format and size of the show. A Kotaku post summarized the news.
The Entertainment Software Association confirmed the weekend's speculation today, E3 is a changing.
The new E3 will be a more intimate affair that focuses on "press events and small meetings with media, retail, development, and other key sectors," according to Doug Lowenstein.
He goes on to say that while there will be opportunities for game demonstrations, E3Expo 2007 will not feature the large trade show environment of previous years.
Ouch.
The Consumer Electronics Association, which runs CES, the hugely popular electronics event, is looking into the possibility (thx Gizmodo) of launch a gaming trade show to fill the gap created by E3.
"Since ESA decided to eliminate the E3 event in its known format, we have been deluged with inquiries on whether we could fill the tradeshow needs of smaller video entertainment companies," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CEA. "Our executive board met yesterday and unanimously asked staff to explore ways that we can help the gaming community."
Added Shapiro, "The Consumer Electronics Association believes that tradeshows are the most viable means for reaching a market as they serve smaller companies and entrepreneurs who need access to media, buyers and investors. Our board, association and events are committed to growing the industry - in fact nearly 80 percent of our members are companies with annual sales of under $10 million."
CES was extremely popular with tech bloggers earlier this year. The CEA is certainly capable of putting a gaming trade show together. Even if the CEA doesn't take up the challenge some organization or company will probably attempt to launch a trade show to fill any void left by E3's shrinkage.

Yvonna Lynn Reveals Booth Babe Secrets
Revolution Advanced has a great article by Yvonna Lynn who was a booth babe at E3 in 2005. She was in the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess booth for Nintendo. Yvonna gives the inside scoop on what booth babes are all about. Yvonna is an exceptionally cool booth babe because she is also a gamer. Unfortunately, being both a gamer and a booth babe is a very rare.
I'm pretty sure you already know that 99.9% of booth babes would probably think a "console" is what you do for someone who is sad. They are generally clueless about gamers and the industry. This is due to game companies using recruiting firms that use promotional models who work all kinds of conventions from medical equipment to exterminator supplies.
After crushing male gamers with that booth babe tidbit Yvonna moves on to offer some reasons why booth babes frequently snub you at game conventions.
They have been told way too many times that they are a goddess when in fact, they are pretty but still human
They have an inside connection to one of the game's execs (if you know what I mean. *wink wink nudge nudge*) who got them that job so they feel they can act any way they want
They are hung over from the party you didn't get invited to the night before
Or they are just being a bitch and would behave that way in any job they had.
You can learn more about Yvonna on her website and here on IMDB. If only she'd start a blog. (via Guardian's technology blog)

Inside the E3 Expo
The E3Expo has provided material for thousands of articles and hundreds of thousands of blog entries. A BBC article offers this interesting description of the massive trade show:
It is as if you have stumbled into a pagan ceremony, where the devotees are paying homage to the gods of video games.
The BBC also said there were 60,000 visitors occupying the shows 540,000 sq ft floor space. MSNBC.com also had a good write-up about the show which contains information about Spore, Nintendogs, The Godfather, EyeToy Kinetic and We Love Katamari. Some people are only interested in pictures of the E3 booth babes and e3girls.com appears to have the best collection of those. More E3 coverage can be found on Yahoo News and the Technorati Tag: E3.

Giant LAN Party
Tom's Hardware Guide went to The Gathering, a giant LAN party held in Norway at an Olympic skating arena called The Vikingship. Tom's Hardware Guide has filed this report about the LAN party. The Gathering (TG) was attended by over 5,200 people which means lots and lots of computers had to be connected together. Tom's Hardware Guide describes the event:
TG isn't like most LAN parties around: there is no age limit, there are no limits regarding speakers, and there's no main target group. The party is for absolutely everyone who is able to take care of themselves and wants to be involved, including gamers and demo scene people, and those who participate to make the most out of it socially. For about $100 you got table space about 2.5 feet square, a power outlet, and a switch port for your network cable for five days. And of course: the craziest Easter you can buy for a modest amount of money.
Tom's Hardware Guide also reported that the LAN party had a 1 Gbps uplink to the core network. Some of the games played at the event were : Counter-Strike, Quake 3, Battlefield and War Craft 3
